URGENT NEED FOR A COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM IN MA'ARRAT AL-NUMAN, SYRIA
This is a solidarity initiative, a cooperation between international activists in Europe and the civil society of a town in North-West Syria.
Since the beginning of the Syrian revolution Ma'arrat al-Numan, in Syria's Idlib province, has been famed for creatively protesting against the regime. With Ma'arra's liberation, in October 2012, its citizens became well-known for how they rebuild their civil society, now without any presence of state authority, and in the face of constant assaults from the Syrian regime's army.
In the past, Ma'arrat al-Numan was a town of 125.000 inhabitants but today most have fled - and merely a quarter of the population remains. Shelling occurs daily from the front lines south of the town, as do sporadic air-strikes from regime airplanes.
Since the heavy shelling began the town's infrastructure has been completely destroyed, and only thanks to initiatives from Ma'arra's dedicated activists, a few shops, volunteer-driven schools and hospitals have again opened their doors.

RAISING FUNDS FOR A COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM, DEADLINE THIS NOVEMBER 2013
In Ma'arrat al-Numan there is no internet, no landlines and no mobile phone net. Therefor, as an alternative communications system, the local civil society group Basmet Amal plans to build a satellite mast that can provide internet and local Skype-telephone-access in the town. This would provide a platform for:
Ma'arra needs support to continue the crucial work of its civil society and of the relief organisations in the town. Muznah from Basmet Amal says:
“Not only would a communicating system support the work of Basmet Amal and the three other big civil society groups in Ma'arrat al-Numan, but it will also break our isolation. Cut off from the rest of Syria and the world, due to the heavy shelling - something everyone in Ma'arra suffers from, very much so is the case for female citizens here.”
HOW WE DO IT:
All money raised will go to facilitate that Basmet Amal can install the communications system in the town.
Basmet Amal of Ma'arra is connected to a small network of solidarity activists in Europe, who also are collecting money and fundraising for this project.
The amount needed to be fundraised is 2.500 Euro = 3.350 USD.
Even small contributions matter!
Should the campaign be fruitful, more projects stand in line. More than two years of stalemate has left Ma'arrat al-Numan in need of everything. An example is the strong need for almost any kind of medicine, most urgent: antibiotics, painkillers, anti-inflammatory and diabetes medication.
