Modogamous Kindle Edition
Everything is going just fine—until the night Kate crosses the line with Mitch, and the boundaries between friendship and love begin to blur. Things get even more complicated when hunky JP enters the scene. What’s a girl to do? Add to the mix a spunky little pug Kate never expected to fall for, and her neatly-ordered life is starting to look more like a dog’s dinner. Maybe her roommate has the right idea after all: forget the men, and stick with a canine companion instead.
It’s time for Kate to figure out what she really wants in life. But can she dig her way out of the mess she’s created before she ends up permanently in the doghouse?
Please note: This book contains adult language and mild sexual content.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book was written like a blog or an online journal except it was awesome! Seriously if blogs were actually written like this I might actually read them :) It was a completely unique writing style from anything I had ever read before and I really enjoyed it(that totally shocked me btw). There were times when the action was real time (not clearly demarcated) and not purely reflection on events past but the story flowed nicely.
I would classify this as a misadventure romantic comedy about finding yourself and what you really want. There wasn't any suspense or mystery so if you are not into romance or stories about finding yourself walk away. Nothing is more annoying than someone complaining about something being missing from a book that clearly states "this is what I am". The title says it all...this book is about dogs and how they affect people's lives so I think animal enthusiasts would enjoy it also :) I can't wait to read whatever this author writes next!
***This book is suitable for mature young adult through adult readers
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhich single girl among us hasn't wanted to put dating in the doghouse?
Kate Adams is five years out of college and settling comfortably into her life. She owns her own home, enjoys her work, and appreciates the tidy order of her world. Then her best friend Evette needs a soft place to land while suffering a bitter divorce (her hubby has knocked up another woman; sort of a marital deal-breaker). She moves into Kate's guest room and drama ensues. Literally. Deciding she's had enough of men, Evette decides being modogamous beats being monogamous - so she adopts a pug, names the little dog Drama, and announces that her primary relationship will be with him. But Evette is still a grief-stricken mess, and while she steeps herself in pity and alcohol, Kate - never a fan of dogs to begin with - finds herself walking Drama in the early morning chill.
Her tidy life upended, Kate reveals herself to be just the kind of heroine I love. She's flawed and funny, a smartass with a good heart. She thinks she's an excellent karaoke singer (she's not). In a moment of weakness, she falls into bed with longtime buddy and coworker Mitch, then agonizes because she's ruined their relationship.
Or has she? Author Karen E. Martin tells the story of the love triangle that follows (yes, you knew there'd be another guy in the picture, didn't you?) with a keen sense of human nature and the sharpest, snarkiest sense of humor I've found in a novel in recent memory. Her depiction of female friendship is real and entertaining, perhaps especially because she doesn't shy away from all those naughty things we ladies discuss. To say that laugh out loud moments abound in this book is an understatement. And happily, there's no shortage of steamy stuff, either.
Love doesn't always come in the neatly-wrapped packages we've requested. Okay, actually, it almost never does. Sometimes love is a pug named Drama (I doubt it's a spoiler to say Kate's view of that little guy softens), and sometimes… Well, just read the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book was not what I was expecting. It was so much more!! If you are looking for a fun loving, laugh a minute read - this is the book for you! You can't help rooting for Kate and her haphazard love life.
Karen Martin's writing style for this book was fresh and different. Her characters were wonderful and the supporting cast helped make the book for me. Little Drama stole half his scenes but how could you not be a dog lover with him around.
I'm just happy in the end Kate ended up with the guy I was rooting for from the start. What a fresh look into dating and relationships in this day and age.
5 stars from me!!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved this book! Karen Martin's use of descriptive words in her writing paints a clear picture of what she is trying to get across to her audience. I COULD ALMOST TASTE THE DAGWOOD! This book is your typical chick-lit, in that you can pretty much tell who ends up with who in the first chapter, with a very NOT typical chick-lit ending that I absolutely LOVED!
I also truly enjoyed the blog interlaced with the rest of the story, giving you Kate's first-person narrative along with the story. And the way the point-of-view shifted at key dialogue points was a wonderful way to tell every side of the story. Karen Martin's first novel was fantastic and I look forward to more stuff in the future!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseKate is a sassy, savvy 20 something single. Her friends are fun and there's the whole Friends thing going on. The back and forth from one character to another was a bit disconcerting for me, but you got to see both sides of a situation always. I was a little put off by the ending when I realized where it was going, but I reconciled myself with this is how it's got to be. I liked Ms. Martin's writing style. I would definitely read another of her stories and would recommend this one as a starter.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBecause the genre is not usually my thing, I was highly surprised by how interested I became in the characters and the plot. I attribute this to the quality of the writing and the author's superb choice of character/event descriptions. This was a very quick, easy read, which, I suppose, is part of what defines "chick lit." What isn't the norm for chick lit, however, was the ending in which the main character, Kate, finds her strength and independence. Overall, I'd say this is an all-around good read for someone who's seeking some light reading involving well-described, lovable characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was hooked from the moment I began reading. I was really pulling for the main characters. Great character development! This cleverly written tale is fun, light-hearded and very relatable to anyone who has ever been in a relationship. I see big screen potential! It's like Sex In the City meets Romeo and Juliet. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Kudos to the author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sassy Writing and Lots of Fun
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIf you're in the mood for a lighthearted read - this is the book for you. It's fun, it's sassy and Kate, the female lead is someone we can all relate to. A story of young love and how to recognise it. Mitch - the leading male character is divine and you'll find yourself rooting for him from early on. The dialogue between the two characters is sparky and full of wit with some real laugh out loud moments. A good debut novel that'll have you looking out for the sequel.
