This training will prepare individuals who are passionate about substance abuse and mental health recovery and suicide prevention to be effective advocates for change in the state legislature and to change public discourse by engaging with the media.  People in recovery from addiction, mental health conditions, and/or suicidal behavior, families affected by addiction, mental health, and suicide, and behavioral health professionals are all welcome.  Skills will include: how to tell your story in a way that’s succinct and compelling, how to structure a meeting with your legislator, how to pitch a story to the media, and tips for being interviewed by the media.  Guest speakers include State Rep. Noel Frame and former KING5 reporter Roberta Romero.  Participants will also learn about current legislation related to suicide prevention, mental health, and addiction recovery and opportunities to get involved in advocacy.
