The most famous Google Bomb, "miserable failure" (which brings up George W. Bush's page at whitehouse.gov) is of course still present.
Although Google does nothing to correct their OWN miserable failure, they did "buy" the top Adwords ad on the term, to link to a blog where they explain that there's nothing to look at here, move along, please!
Pranks like this may be distracting to some, but they don't affect the overall quality of our search service, whose objectivity, as always, remains the core of our mission
Yea, right.
If this can be so easily done for a policital or "prank" motovation, why should we assume that it doesn't work equally well for financial gain?
IMO, the very underpinning of Google's search strategy - that of counting links in - is now officially bankrupt. Google needs to find another rabbit, and another hat.
Instead, they are targeting the candidate's names, and trying to steer which articles about the candidate rise to the top of the SERPs.
It will be interesting to see how successful they are, and how high-profile and well-known a candidate they can manipulate the SERPs for.
If they succeed, I think this will have significantly more fallout for Google than past cases. The previous cases have been funny and a bit embarassing. If these succeed, it calls into question some basic premises of today's search algorithms.
