A Sister's Promise (Sisters Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 2,181 ratings

Kate Hopper can list a million reasons why she doesn’t have kids. No, more like reasons why she shouldn’t have kids: genetics, a dysfunctional family, and ultimately, the fear that she wasn’t cut out to be June Cleaver or Carol Brady or Claire Huxtable. TV moms always made it look so easy, but Kate knows better.

When Kate’s little sister, Joely, refuses a medical treatment because it will leave her infertile, Kate is willing to say anything to save her sister’s life—even promising to have a baby. Kate decides to keep her rash words a secret from her husband until she can figure out whether she really wants to be a mother. Especially since they agreed their marriage would remain childless.

A sister’s promise and a wife’s promise: Kate must break one. Should she risk everything she has for the unknown?

I loved it, Kate and Joely touched my heart. Kate a high school counselor, Joely an artist and more easy going, more relaxed in her life. These sisters endured a lot of heartache at such an early life...Kate the in controlled older sister felt she had to watch and protect her little sister. Both have a lot going on in their lives...Joely after learning of her lupus...a disease that they learned was the cause of their mothers own death. So much going on...lots of twists and turns that keep you on your toes! Enjoyed this book and would highly reccomend it.

I would call this book romantic fiction. The story is definitely heavy on interpersonal relationships. This book is excellent and a little longer than a quick read. Character development is so clever and so well done, you will love the sisters Kate and Joely. My only complaint and the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is the ending is abrupt. This book does deal with issues like chronic illness, physical and sexual abuse, drug abuse, smoking and pre-marital sex and pregnancy. It is not sexually explicit or full of foul language. It is very well written and edited (well done!). The story continues in a second book about Joely called "What Happiness Looks Like". I think just about anyone who enjoys romantic fiction, female fiction, books about teachers or books about someone with lupus will enjoy this book!

The storyline was good. It centered on the bond between two sisters, at the same time touching on more sensitive topics like genetics, to have or not to have children, child abuse, school politics. I also liked the flow of the story, except that I felt that the ending was a bit rushed or sudden. Probably the author wanted to put in some element of surprise there; but I was more disappointed than surprised. There was a lot of nice scenes, a lot of details in the earlier chapter, and I felt that these were all for nothing for such an abrupt ending.

I'm still giving it 3 stars to be fair, as it took me more than a week to finish it. I figure it was my busy weekday schedule that prevented me from finishing sooner as I was able to do so during the long weekend break. It might have had a different effect if I had read through it without so much breaks in between.

I had never read anything by Karen Lenfestey before, but I will again. Great Book!!
This is a story that shows the love between two sisters. One has Lupus, the other one a husband. The sick sister wants a baby more that anything. The other one has promised her husband that they will remain child free. The sick sister is relentless in her quest for a child which puts her sister right in the middle of her and her husbands wishes.
This book shows the problems and struggles they go through, and how it is solved. The problem does get solved though,
with a surprise ending. I am pretty good at figuring out endings, but this one throw me.
A great book. I am so glad I read it.

This was a wonderful story of sisters, bound even closer than normal, by the child hood they shared; as well as their DNA.

I loved these two right from the start. Joely is faced with circumstances that would be daunting to many. She projects her dreams onto her sister Kate, hoping to live vicariously through her and enjoy an experience that she feels will never be her own.

But Kate and her husband have their own vision of life and it is not in line with Joely's plans.

I believe there are three truths about every situation in life; yours, mine and the absolute truth! I felt Kate was caught in that scenario. Joely thought she knew what she wanted , Kate and her husband thought they wanted something very different. In the end Kate had to discover what she really wanted and make a decision that was not based on Joely or Mitch`s wishes.

I loved the way this book ended. In real terms, life and relationships can take unpredictable turns;this was true in "A sisters Promise".

I really enjoy Karen Lenfestey`s writing. I read "What Happiness Looks Like" first, and I liked it so much that I wanted to read "A Sister`s Promise" to get full picture of Joely and Kate`s story. I was not disappointed and I would recommend that anyone interested read both of them!

I enjoyed much of the story. I "got" that Kate (35) had difficulty letting her sister, Joely (33), make her own decisions. Given their losing their parents when they were kids and being taken in by their aunt (who made it obvious how much she resented them, and uncle, who didn't get involved much, Kate was still acting in the "mother" role, which she adapted after they lost their parents. What I liked was the growth they each displayed throughout the story as they handled Joely's lupus and Kate's hope for tenure as a high school guidance counselor in her fifth year on the job.

What I found most disconcerting about the writing was that there was no hint at how much time had passed from one paragraph to another. It was confusing and the story didn't flow smoothly.

Joely, who has Lupus, extracts a promise from her older sister to have a baby. The sister is content with the upper middle-class life that she has with her husband. Despite deciding to have a childless marriage, she changes her mind, causing her husband to leave temporarily.
There are several sub-plots involved in the book as well. It's a good book which touches your emotions. The ending was completely unexpected.

I enjoyed this book very much. The support the sisters shared is a goal most sisters don't reach. I understand much more about lupus and its effects and the stamina needed to deal with it. I am also once again amazed at the fact that wrong doing is so often ignored as that is the "easy" solution, not the " right" solution. I am left wanting to know how the story goes on.
