Art Syllabus

Syllabus

First Year ART classes are entry level. No experience is needed to be successful. You can earn an “A” if you focus your attention to the assignments, and on practicing skills learned in class.

Lessons focus on Seeing, Drawing, and Composition. You will see many demonstrations of “tool” techniques (how to use art tools). Some or all of the following media will be used to create two dimensional (flat) art:

graphite, ink, pastel, watercolor, tempera, charcoal, colored pencil, and crayon.

Assignments include lines, shapes, shading, depth, pattern, scale, space, human figure (including proportion and portraits), color theory, art history, perspective, and an introduction to commercial applications (advertising) of art.

Grading Policy

Each course contains several categories which students will participate in to earn their grade. The categories are weighted this way

Classwork, notes, daily drawing- 10%

Quiz and Test are T/F, Fill in the blank, Short answer, - 15%

Projects- 65%

Presentations- 10%

Project grading is through rubrics. Each project has new concepts and techniques to practice before the actual project assignment is given. There are several classwork progress grades recorded before each project grade. Grades are posted online and in the classroom. Mostly every week.

Scoring Definitions for Rubric Elements

9-10= Advanced in the use of techniques beyond expected beginning skills.

8= Proficient in the use of techniques.

7= Basic understanding of techniques. Student has some success and completes the skills.

6= Poor understanding of techniques. Skills are unsuccessful or incomplete.

Due dates are scheduled to keep the class moving forward with learning. Those students who do not complete a project or quiz on the due date may have another three days to submit the project without penalty. After one week, the student must have a parent / guardian write a signed note stating, "Please allow my son or daughter to submit an assignment more that one week late." Hopefully, this action ensures the parent knows about the work habits of the student.

During the last two weeks of each grading period no late work is accepted. Students must turn in their work on time to receive a score.

Do your best to make up missed work on your own time, not in class. Ask questions! Sometimes the studio is open for students to work at lunch.

Absent for a quiz or test? Make up a quiz or test within 5 days of returning to class.
