APPLICATIONS CLOSE 22ND OF OCTOBER
www.transcendfestival.comAbout us and this role:
Transcend Festival is a horizontally-organised weekend of anti-oppression politics, workshops, performance and music run by and for trans, non-binary and intersex people, currently being organised for June 5-7th 2020. It's central to our aims that the festival is accessible to, and prioritises the voices of, those who face oppression within the trans community. As the organising group is currently majority white, we want to avoid asking for unpaid emotional labour from the PoC who are already involved as organisers/volunteers.
We are looking to work with a grassroots consultant who is:
- a Trans, Intersex, or Gender Non Conforming Black Person or Person of Colour
- able to use their lived experience to represent TIPoC, and their social networks to reach out to others
- excited about the idea of Transcend Festival, and aligned with our aim to always prioritise marginalised folx
We ask this, whilst understanding that it's not possible or appropriate for any individual to represent the whole diversity of TIPoC communities.
The job will involve a significant amount of creative control and leadership. We have drawn up a flexible guide to what the role will look like below, but we expect it to be a role that you shape.
Main tasks include:
- Reaching out and forming a PoC caucus within the organising group, using the Transcend platform, our links with other groups, and your own networks. The aim of this will be to maximise inclusion, representation, safety and enjoyment of TIPoC at the festival. We hope this will include planning how to spend a TIPoC budget of £1000 (for example on a BPoC only space, workshops/activity facilitators, free tickets, food/drinks, or whatever you choose), but this is dependent on our funding situation and to be confirmed.
- Organising/facilitating the first few meetings of a PoC caucus.
- Act as a link between a PoC caucus and the general organising group.
- Provide input on how the festival can be more inclusive to TIPoC. This is something all organisers are dedicated to, but don't all have lived experience to draw from.
- Debriefing with us after the project to ensure that we learn from what worked and didn't work, preparing a handover document to be used in the future, by yourself, or whoever does this role in future festivals.
Other possibilities:
- Helping with inclusive and anti-racist wording on public platforms, including translating between the vernacular language of social justice and 'plain speak' without watering down important messages.
- Bringing insight of TIPoC needs to a safer spaces agreement or accountability process.
- Training alongside other organisers/volunteers to offer welfare support at the festival.
- Helping to screen performer and facilitator applicants for racism.
- Reaching out to other trans-friendly PoC groups and service providers for collaboration.
- Connecting with people from organisations who may have experienced similar challenges and sharing wisdom and experience.
Hours and pay:
We can pay someone £12 per hour, 4 hours per month, until the festival in June 2020. You can organise your hours as you want, and the job can be split between two people if you'd like to work with someone else (apply separately and let us know that you want split the role between you). We’re looking for someone who will aim to stay with us until the festival - but of course you're free to leave at any point.
Communication and support:
You will be communicating directly with just one or two members of the organising group, who will aim to have a monthly check-in with you to see how the work is going, how we can be providing you with ongoing support, and helping you to feel safe. This can happen via face-to-face meetings, phone calls, skype, and/or email.
What next:
We'll aim to get back to all applicants on Sunday the 27th October, and shortlisted applicants will be emailed an invite to an informal interview (skype or face-to-face), with the aim of getting to know each other, how we can work together, and to find out what we can do to support you in this work.
At this point, we only have the money to pay one person for their time, or two if the hours are split, but we would absolutely love to hear from you if you have the energy to be involved in a voluntary capacity.
