-Lorilyn Roberts, Author of the Multi-Award Winning YA Series Seventh Dimension
"Unlocking the Truth of Daniel: Digging Deeper Volume 1 by Laura J. Davis is a surprisingly powerful and instrumental work that will be invaluable to many when it comes to understanding scripture and translating it into real life and in prayer. The author skillfully takes readers on a step by step journey through the Book of Daniel, a book she considers to be both "historical and prophetic." In the introduction she declares: "We will look at it verse by verse, making use of why, when, where, how, what, and who questions." Volume 1 in the Digging Deeper Series, this book is a great tool for rediscovering God's word in human history." - 5 stars! Ruffina Oserio, for Reader's Favorite

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2016I just finished “Unlocking the Truth of Daniel” by Laura J. Davis and am thrilled by all I learned in this bible study. The questions Davis asks truly did unlock things I had previously overlooked, and her inclusion of historical facts provided a setting for increasing understanding of the book. This is a brilliant, well-thought out bible study that is clear and illuminating. Although I used the study alone, it would be perfect for small groups.

And thus, Laura Davis invites us to study the Old Testament book of Daniel together. She proclaims that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and thus worthy of study and as relevant to us in the 21st century as it was to the first readers of the book of Daniel.
She demonstrates a commanding Bible knowledge, and her study plan for readers is clearly laid out, including thought-provoking questions, helpful charts, and enlightening explanations of varying biblical translations and their usefulness. Her colored pencil suggestion is simple but yields new depths of understanding to the Bible passage at hand.
The first half of the study deals with Daniel’s account of his Babylonian captivity—the three Hebrew children in the fiery furnace, the lion’s den, and other wonderful stories, which, the author points out, are not just children’s favorites, but inspiring for every adult Christian who wrestles with duty, faith in the midst of persecution, and the secular, post-Christian world in which we live.
The second half of the study deals with Daniel’s prophetic dreams and those of powerful rulers of his day, men who built empires, who conquered and were conquered in turn by other mighty kings. Daniel’s prophecies are typically seen as pointing to the end of time when Christ comes to replace all of mankind’s sinful empires with his own perfect Kingdom of God. But Laura Davis offers a convincing argument that, while Daniel is applicable in many ways to modern readers, the book is not “specifically about the end-times so much as it is a book about the end of the nation of Israel at that time.” Mankind’s final “end times” are described in the New Testament book of Revelation. (Which I hope Laura will provide a study for soon.)
Our time is indeed a violent one, and “it is easy to become distraught and anxious.” But Laura Davis encourages readers to “keep your eyes focused on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. He is coming again to establish His kingdom.”
Until he does, Unlocking the Truth of Daniel reminds us that Christ is King of kings, Lord of lords, and the one who is sovereign over all the rulers of the earth and the affairs of man—a comforting thought in the midst of the 2016 election cycle when we wonder who will be our next leaders.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2018Laura Davis’ study of Daniel is perfectly balanced and well thought out. She balances both the historical and prophetical elements, promoting you to think for yourself while still explaining, and developing life applications while exploring theology.
Students of the Bible will greatly appreciate her approach. Right from the start she clarifies her style as she instructs the readers to: “Remember, I am just a guide. Don’t take my word for it; investigate for yourself.” She consistently promotes this throughout the study, which I appreciated. A great example of this is in the ninth chapter, “The Ten Horns,” where she thoroughly presents three competing theories on Daniel 7:8-12 and leaves us to make our own decision. An important theme of this study is that before providing commentary, each chapter begins with Davis sending us to the scripture first. Only after we read it for ourselves does she begin to provide analysis.
Though the reader is encouraged to think for themselves, this study also provides deep insights that Davis ties together extremely well. One example is in the second chapter where she investigates the use of the word “awesome” in Daniel 2:31 and compares our perspective of that word to its root meaning of “fearsome.” By itself the comparison is interesting, however, later in the study when comparing dreams in the second chapter to those in later chapters that subtle difference makes some remarkable comparisons come to the forefront. I appreciate the extensive research Davis did while organizing this book which allowed her to connect many passages spanning from Daniel, to the Psalms, to Revelation in order to clarify key thoughts.
Unlocking the Truth of Daniel will be appreciated by a wide range of people and is valuable as a self-study of Daniel, as a group-study, and as a reference.
