About the author

Winner of the Holt Medallion, Maggie, Daphne du Maurier, Reviewer’s Choice and Epic awards, Barbara Monajem wrote her first story at eight years old about apple tree gnomes. She published a middle-grade fantasy when her children were young. When they grew up, she turned to writing for adults, first the Bayou Gavotte paranormal mysteries and then Regency romances with intrepid heroines and long-suffering heroes (or vice versa). Some of her Regencies have magic in them and some don’t (except for the magic of love, which is in every story she writes).
Barbara loves to cook, especially soups, and is an avid reader. There are only two items on her bucket list: to make asparagus pudding and succeed at knitting socks. She’ll manage the first but doubts she’ll ever accomplish the second. This is not a bid for immortality but merely the dismal truth. She lives near Atlanta, Georgia with an ever-shifting population of relatives, friends, and feline strays.

This was a surprisingly entertaining, quick read. The cover looked dated, so I wasn't expecting very much from the book...but browsing through the first few pages got me hooked, and before I knew it, I was thumbing through the rest of the pages until I finished it in one sitting.
The hero & heroine met 4 years ago, fell in love, but nothing came out of it as he was 'too honorable' to do any seducing (her parents refused his suit, but we do not know this till the end of the book). Given a second chanced meeting in his home, where the heroine is masquerading as his bride/wife, he decides that he will not let the opportunity go to waste. She's no chaste virgin, as she has slept with his (ex)friend before, but he doesn't mind.
I'm no prude, and would never balk at a heroine who's had prior sexual experience. But in Pompiea's case, I was a bit surprised at how the authoress painted her as a young girl who merely gave in to his friend's seduction - not because she had feelings for him, but out of pure lust for her first time. This is seldom depicted in regency romances. The sex scenes are middle of the road spicy... not raunchy enough to be wholly erotic, but delicious enough for a regency romp.
This is a book to ensure a quick escape, and you can devour it within 2 hours. A nice enough distraction, but not something I'd harp about. One of those read 'em, leave 'em books. No intricate plots or sinister villains... think of it as a pleasant warm glass of milk with a dash of honey - right before bed time!
