September Newsletter

The latest from Portland Museum...

Hello, friends, and happy Labor Day!

We are officially making this a monthly newsletter, so you can expect to hear the latest Portland Museum news on the first Monday of every month! So, without further ado, here's what September has in store for you and what's around the corner...

Although summer is coming to an end, we'll be maintaining free museum admission and actively fundraising to make it a permanent feature so that everyone has access to a quality museum experience. Stop by and see us: Wed-Fri 12-6pm, Sat 12-4pm
Louisville's Give for Good is 10 days away! Our 2020 campaign highlights just a few of the things that makes Portland Museum a "hidden gem." You can help us spread the word — and makes us less hidden! — by signing up to be a virtual fundraiser on our #GiveForGoodLou profile or by simply sharing our link. The one-day-only fundraiser starts at 12am on Sep 17th. Click HERE to learn more!
In case you don't follow-us on Facebook or Instagram, you should check us out! Happening right now is the 'opening' of Art in the Time of COVID-19, a digital exhibition curated by our amazing exhibition/education coordinator, Bailey O'Leary, for her MFA curatorial studies practicum project. It's a refreshing take on the digital exhibition experience, and we're beyond honored to be part of her growth as a curator! Stay tuned for a comprehensive exhibition website and catalog.
This week, we're wrapping up exhibit updates with a complete overhaul in the Architecture Gallery and a Shippingport pop-up exhibit in the Great Hall Gallery. And while updating the Architecture Gallery, we unearthed a spot that provided the perfect alcove to house March's Portland Memorial Missionary Baptist Church pop-up exhibit! This important story will eventually move to the permanent exhibit — "Portland: The Land, the River, and the People" — and it is the first step towards decolonizing our permanent exhibit.
Captain Mary Miller is settling into her new home in a cozy room off of the permanent exhibit. It has been quite a feat relocating the animatronic and her wheelhouse, but we are so excited that her unique story will now be in conversation with the permanent exhibit's timeline. While we put the finishing touches on the animatronic components, we'll have a video showing her in action. You can also see the video and learn about the "Lady Steamboat Man" via our Cultural Pass website; click HERE.
Portland Museum is the proud new host of the Portland Art & Heritage Fair thanks to the neighborhood association, Portland Now. On Oct 10th, outdoors & socially-distanced on the newly expanded museum grounds, the 7th annual celebration of the creativity and history of Portland’s current and former residents will feature LVA’s Juried Art Competition, a local hot rod car show, live chainsaw carving, live music, kid-focused art workshops, backyard farming demos, and much more...plus free admission! We'll also be celebrating 2 new murals — see time-lapse videos of each HERE and HERE. Stay tuned for more details, as well as a Facebook event page!

Coming Soon ...

  • We're currently working on updates to our virtual infrastructure to make available two amazing resources:
    • A coming-soon digital collection of hundreds of historic photographs courtesy of the US Army Corps
    • A priceless Portland-research index by Doris Batliner, former Chief Librarian of The Courier-Journal
  • Upcoming exhibition updates include a changeover in the Art-Heritage-Community Gallery to highlight The Dolfinger, Henrietta Helm, and the former Shippingport Memorial Garden.

MUCH THANKS & LOVE to our loyal and new supporters — we can not do this without you! Special thanks to our Board member Bobby Shore for his dedicated work to keep our grounds a constant display of nature's beauty. And shout-outs to Chris Jackson for volunteering to organize our printshop and to Board member Katy Delahanty and Louisville-based musician Jim James for lending their hands to paint our new fence.
