Our 5th story in the Al Hakawati series comes from the brilliant TV & Radio Broadcaster, Petroc Trelawny, who you will usually hear on BBC Radio 3’s Breakfast. He reads an extract from ‘A Dragon Apparent’, by Norman Lewis and published by Eland, who have generously granted permission for us to use it. Lewis was a journalist and author known particularly for his travel writing. ‘A Dragon Apparent’ covers his travels to Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos) in the early 1950's during the protracted war between the Viet Minh and French colonial forces. The extract Petroc has chosen focusses on Lewis’ travels to Luang Phabang, the ancient capital of Luang Prabang Province in northern Laos where the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers meet. If you need to be transported to “a gentle, eccentric place of paradise” this is your ticket! We’re delighted that Petroc has agreed to be one of our Storytellers and are extremely grateful to him, Eland for allowing us to use the extract and Nick MacDonald for editing.

While the world rightly focusses on COVID-19, it is so important that we do not forget those suffering in other ways. Hands Up funds vital health and education services in northern Syria and Lebanon. These services don't only provide schooling and care for patients, they also promote stability and hope. COVID19 threatens their continuation and we are determined to do all that we can to keep them going. Any donation you feel able to give will make a difference. Thank you.
