Loyola University's Environment Program and Center for the study of New Orleans hosted a panel on water management Thursday night.

The New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board has been under fire since the city’s pumping system failed and caused major flooding in August.

Now the agency is being criticized for accounting problems, such as over-charging customers for water bills. Meanwhile, there’s a new management board in place, and the pumps are still being repaired. There are a lot of ideas for how to fix these issues, and many of them were addressed at a panel Thursday night at Loyola University. For this week’s coastal news roundup, coastal reporters Tegan Wendland and Travis Lux offer a summary.

The roundup is a collaboration with nola.com/The Times Picayune.

Support for the Coastal Desk comes from the Walton Family Foundation, the Coypu Foundation and the Greater New Orleans Foundation.

Tegan has reported on the coast for WWNO since 2015. In this role she has covered a wide range of issues and subjects related to coastal land loss, coastal restoration, and the culture and economy of Louisiana’s coastal zone, with a focus on solutions and the human dimensions of climate change. Her reporting has been aired nationally on Planet Money, Reveal, All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Marketplace, BBC, CBC and other outlets. She’s a recipient of the Pulitzer Connected Coastlines grant, CUNY Resilience Fellowship, Metcalf Fellowship, and countless national and regional awards.
