Hepatitis A continues to spread in Florida with over 1,000 cases this year, which is more than the total number of cases combined over the past five years. Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nunez announced on Monday she was working with the Center for Disease Control and the Florida Department of Public Health to focus efforts on reducing the spread of Hepatitis A. She joined Sundial to talk about how all organizations are working to increase vaccinations in underserved communities.
The United States Department of Agriculture defines a food desert as, "parts of the country vapid of fresh fruit, vegetables, and other healthful whole foods, usually found in impoverished areas." This month, "Miami-area Grocery Access Program" selected over 100 families from Pinewood, Opa Locka, Liberty City, and Overtown who live in food deserts and provide them with transportation to the grocery store as part of a pilot initiative. The program is in partnership with the ride-sharing app Lyft and the non-profit organization Health in the Hood. Asha Walker, the executive director of Health in the Hood joined Sundial.
The Trust for Public Lands recently ranked 100 cities with the best public parks. Their criteria included acreage, access, amenities and activities. Miami ranked 54 th. Charlie McCabe is the Director of The Trust for Public Land’s Center for City Park Excellence. John Pipoly is John Pipoly is the Project Coordinator for Broward County parks. And Joanna L. Lombard is on the Board of National Recreation and Parks Association. They joined Sundial to talk about what makes parks so special and what these rankings mean.
