Goals and Background

Nevada County Transportation Commission (NCTC) and the City of Nevada City are developing the Zion-Sacramento Pedestrian and Bicycle Mobility Plan to improve safety and access for people walking, bicycling, and rolling to schools and other destinations.

The plan will identify potential pedestrian and bicycle improvements in the project area: Zion Street from Ridge Road to Sacramento Street, Sacramento Street from Zion Street to South Pine Street, and connections to Deer Creek Elementary School via Doane Road and to Seven Hills Middle School via Brock Road and Reward Street

The Zion Street / Sacramento Street corridor connects residents directly to three Nevada City schools, providing the perfect opportunity to encourage active travel to school. However, the corridor does not currently provide safe walking and bicycling conditions suitable for children and families. To meet the community’s desire to provide safe school connections, NCTC aims to improve the corridor for community members of all ages, modes, and abilities. Creating safe pedestrian and bicycle routes to school supports residents who rely on walking and bicycling for daily transportation to school and may encourage active travel to improve public health.

This corridor also serves as a key connection to the Seven Hills Business District and to Grass Valley. Pedestrian and bicycle facilities along Zion Street and Sacramento Street will provide regional active transportation connections beyond the study area.

The Zion-Sacramento Pedestrian and Bicycle Mobility Plan will provide a framework for improving safety, mobility and school access along the Zion Street / Sacramento Street corridor for pedestrians and bicyclists. The Plan will include:

  • A robust community engagement process to better understand the transportation needs of the community
  • An assessment of existing pedestrian and bicycle travel conditions
  • A list of recommended pedestrian and bicycle improvements championed by the community.
