Our hosting plan runs on a 3-year commitment, and it has now been 3 whole years since our last big server move!

Before the end of this month, we will once again be moving to a bigger and better server.

Comparative hardware specs include:

- 16GB (rather than the current 8GB) of memory, making my job easier.
- Roughly 3x the processing capabilities.
- Solid state disks (rather than HDDs), offering much faster disk access. My benchmark shows read speeds of ~8x current!

Software wise, improvements include:

- An updated Operating System, with far better support for the next 3+ years.
- Latest MariaDB, which is a bit faster, especially with the extra memory!
- The search backend has been switched from Sphinx 2 (now 8 years old!) to the latest Manticore, which is faster and more stable.
- Additionally, I have significantly improved the emailing setup. This will hopefully make notifications and newsletters far more reliable. Fingers crossed on this one.

I will be moving things over the next couple of days, so you might notice some minimal disruptions while that's happening. There will also be a period of downtime (with the site being replaced by a maintenance page) lasting several hours.

Brilliant work as usual from Yuriy behind the scenes in New York. He deserves a LOT of pizzas from members - via PayPal in ANY currency to - yuriy [at] rusko.org 8-) 8-) 8-)

"Everything on the web is free''. Wrong - not in 2023 it is not. It costs HEAPS for large high volume sites. Try logging into a major newspaper site - they want $50 to $100 a year. :!:

Yuri has spent a great deal of time in recent months, sourcing a far more gruntier, more secure, and far larger US hosted server program, that costs me a great deal more than the current one, but it should mean our very enviable stability in the past 3 years, will be even better still, going forward. And much FASTER too.

As usual, I refuse to sign up for the endless intrusive ads, and cookie tracking etc, the marketers keep asking us to sign up for, and load up on here. We get 100,000s of visits a month and they love these busy sites. Despite this - Stampboards remains totally FREE to use, and funding some beers and Pizzas to Yuriy is a very small cost for members to pay, to keep things running like clockwork - and ALWAYS improving. :D

Our millions of images take up TEN times more space than the database size, and are stored separately. We truly are the WIKIPEDIA of stamp collecting - GLOBALLY.

Yuriy has also upgraded us to the very latest phpBB software, taking us 5 updates over what we have now.

The new board is now being readied behind the scenes, to move over to the brand new servers. We have kept the OUTER appearance of it near identical to what we have now.

emailing other member will be FAR better, due to new 'bolt on' software Yuriy has sourced -

This is the sad 2.8 score analysis of emailing from this current ('old') stampboards server: https://y.rusko.net/stampboards-old-server.png

This is the same analysis on the new server, as of 5 minutes ago: https://y.rusko.net/stampboards-new-server.png - 10 out of 10

I personally hate major visual facelifts of sites, 'just for change’s sake', so when we go 'live' this weekend, it will be familiar and easy to use. All the work goes on quietly BEHIND the scenes. 8-) 8-)

We're now on the new server. Still some tweaking to be done, but everything important should be working.

Please report anything usual (slowness, errors, etc.) or missing (images, content, etc.).

With a few exceptions, I pretty much copied my performance settings from the previous server. Since the hardware here is different, it likely means some tweaking will be necessary. In order to do that, however, I need a few days worth of data from you fine folks using the site normally.

I'll then go back and see what can be improved.

Very smooth and painless Yuriy, for such a large transfer.

Looks visually pretty much identical to the old version, which is good. 8-)

I am sure members will report anything here, that might be noticed as an issue or glitch.

And I hope the beers and Pizzas keep rolling in to New York as a small crowd funding 'thank you'! :!:

The only thing I noticed was having to log in again, but that is a one-off.

I sent Yuriy some beer money, and came here to write the above, when the system was temporarily unavailable! :D

But that was a few minutes and all OK now.

There is a strange slowness issue that - may be - geographically detectable. I'm trying to chase it down, which requires the server to keep being reset. You might see errors if you refresh while that's happening - sorry about that.

If you keep being asked to login, please clear the cookies for this site (or all sites, if you prefer). I had to do that too.

EDIT: Okay, that seems to have done something and the site is loading quickly (as it should). Fingers crossed.
EDIT2: Okay, hopefully now, we're good to go.

All seems smooth to me Yuri.

I recall you added a custom Mod that added space before every image, that seems not to have made the transition so images now jam up to text, but an easy fix I am sure, and a very successful major upgrade!

I think I may have been mistaken; another notification was there below the top one, and all are now cleared. But I could have sworn the number was 1 and not 2. Ignore it and I'll keep an eye on it.

Display formatting on iPad (and maybe other tablets) is different this morning.

Previously the portrait format would show the columns on the right that the landscape format shows.

PORTRAIT
PORTRAIT
Landscape
Landscape
As an aside, I don’t know how this will turn out but on PREVIEW if I view THIS post composition in portrait mode the images are LEFT aligned, and if I view in landscape mode they are RIGHT aligned despite being enclosed in CENTRE tags.

None of this hinders the use of the forum, but you wanted to know of anything.

I’ll press submit and see how it turns out when posted.

In portrait mode all text and images appear to the left with blank space to the right - but this is where the other columns should be.

In landscape mode the screen is filled and all looks good (I may be an exception but I prefer to use my pad in portrait mode! It’s easier to use.)

Why anyone looks at a Bulletin Board vertically only the Brits can advise. Each to their own. Do you also also turn your laptop sideways, to replicate it? :!:

Most similar things I look at are also screwed up. Cunning solution - turn phone sideways. National Emergency averted.

Looks perfect on my phone. Horizontally, as is the logical way to view Bulletin Boards.

And a big Thank You to Yuriy, for the much sharper and larger logo at top left of each page, replacing the smaller, very fuzzy one that we had before.

How you manage to use a phone with a pop-up keyboard in landscape is beyond me but maybe you have a large one?

And if you are reading an e-book do you do it landscape, so that you see two pages - or one very w i d e one - or do you do it portrait, which is the normal way of reading a book?

I've used a tablet for 7 years and most websites - including this one - adapt perfectly well to three formats - desktop & laptop, tablet, and phone. The layout is automatically varied because websites written in modern coding adapt the display because they detect the type of device.

There are even websites which assist webmasters because they show what your website will display in the three formats. I'm sure Yuriy is aware of this and also knows about display adaptation.

As I wrote, if you read it all:
None of this hinders the use of the forum, but you wanted to know of anything.
If this has changed, please let me know, but don't shoot the messenger for complying with your requests.

P1050587.JPG

Works like a charm. Here cellphones are oblong in shape. So reading and typing on Bulletin Boards works best that way. Maybe in the UK they are square or circular? Who knows.

I've never read an e-book, and do not plan to. Too busy working at selling stamps at 2.30am, and keeping this board ticking along smoothly etc. How you read e-books has nothing to do with STAMPBOARDS, or our new upgrade, but by all means start a new thread on the joys of that on your device, if you wish.

Anyway, seems like members here can see no REAL world issues, related to the latest upgrade that Yuriy has just done, that he might look at?

The emailing seems greatly improved from what I can see?? What are experiences of others since the upgrade?

One thing that pops up a lot is the 'place attachment inline' issue with images.

Or rather, newer members not using it, and so posting an image with the white border.

Why not make 'place attachment inline' the default?

You are right, it is an issue for a lot of new members, especially the many of whom are older.

I am talking to Yuriy now about how we can reword some of the icons and buttons to make it much, much clearer. I will not say 'dumb it down' - but it is! Watch this space. :D

The phpBB base software constraints, we are largely stuck with, but we can tinker solidly about the edges with such things.

Let us never forget until 3 years back, it was IMPOSSIBLE to add images here inline. We all needed to use photobucket and Imgur and Imgbox etc to host images posted here. (All now banned here totally of course.)

Photobucket went feral and demanded $US100s a year RANSOM from users so their images could be seen. Many foolishly paid that - so flicking a pizza and beer to Yuriy for getting us set up so well now with totally on-site hosting, is very small change compared to that!

Image

Members here spent literally THOUSANDS of hours cunningly rescuing all the ransom images - worth reading for newer members -

https://www.stampboards.com/viewforum.php?f=65

I agitated with the phpBB development board process, to consider beefing up the ability to host images ON BOARD, and slowly but surely, that was all done, and developer code was written etc. 8-)

Thanks again Yuriy .. was just throwing out this code -

Search failed: connection to localhost:9308 failed (errno=113, msg=No route to host)

Great to see it restored to normality so fast - as usual. :)

Members are reminded the site specific GOOGLE search box at the base of each page is always handy, if the main search box top right plays up. :)

An excellent modification Yuriy, for adding that heading length 'countdown clock' that now means members writing thread headings that resemble short novels, are no more!

Superb job once again Yuriy, wrestling with a complex issue - Yuriy says we are probably the only one of the mega millions of phpBB software Bulletin Boards globally, to have this feature, as he wrote and added the code himself.

Again deservant of a beer and pizza from members here! 8-)

Hopefully the "place-inline" behaviour default for images can be solved or streamlined, as that really is as common issue for new members - and not so new ones!

I was just looking at the Admin log of downtime and outages for stampboards for the past year or so, since our super MAJOR upgrade in mid 2020. We moved from the flaky and buggy and erratic servers in Oklahoma, and I see we have since had almost ZERO downtime or outages, due to our new robust and large private servers in the USA, with relay back-ups, and load sharing on both coasts there.

We have logged just a few minutes downtime in TOTAL since then. An incredible achievement, given the large user and visitor traffic we have here, and the vast data storage and back-up now of 10 million messages.

Facebook and YouTube has literally been out of action way more than we have in that time! My BANK website here is down regularly. As are most Stamp Auction sites. stampboards is as solid as a rock.

Yuriy in New York as always keeps it all ticking along very smoothly in the background, and is just about to update us to the very latest phpBB software, with even more features. He sourced the hosting company after days of research, and chose SUPERBLY, I am sure all will agree. :!:

AND we have expanded our storage to an ever larger server system, seeing we now have about TWO MILLION images self-hosted on our own SUPER SECURE servers now - we are truly the Wikipedia of stamp collecting. 8-)

We are the WORLD'S number one Stamp Bulletin Board because of our millions of google indexed images, and the vast depth of ELEVEN MILLION posts, and that costs money to do, and to back-up robustly and securely forever.

Yuriy is not even a stamp collector - he just likes us as a quirky fun project for him, and has helped out for well over a decade or more here, so I'd again encourage ALL members to do your bit, and fund a pizza and some beers etc via PayPal in ANY currency to - yuriy [at] rusko.org (Think of it as your oblique Stampboards Membership Fee, or Crowd Funding!)

Just a few 100 generous Community minded members sending only a modest $10 or $20 pays for a lot of his time, and shows he is appreciated by those here who benefit from HIS super back-room skills. Please do it NOW. CROWD FUNDING at its finest. A new issue stamp set at the PO costs you that! :)

Think of just how many valuable things you have learned, shared, swapped etc, and the many new friends made here. All of them worth $US20 or so a year, I am certain. :!: :!:

All the US dedicated server hosting is at my cost, and always will be, and that runs to many $US1,000s a year, but please do show your small personal appreciation for the tech whizz who keeps that all ticking along with no glitches in the background all year. He has quietly in the background saved us from disaster MANY times over our long history, trust me. Spam attacks, DDOS attacks, hacking attempts etc, all foiled etc as he knows what he is doing. :!:

Yuriy is one of the head coding and design developers globally of this phpBB board skeleton, used by millions of Bulletin Boards worldwide, most far smaller than this of course, and has customised the back-end of this version entirely for our needs - larger easy to read fonts given our age demographic, added many different navigation buttons, very special attention to the easy adding of LARGE images, and many other features not immediately obvious to the casual user.

I have never sent a text message in my life - true, and have never used Facebook or Twitter or Instagram, or had a Zoom meeting etc, so if you relied on my ''tech skills'', there would be a totally blank screen facing you right now!

There Are NO Free Lunches In Life - so, please PayPal Yuriy a Pizza and some beers! yuriy [at] rusko.org .... PEOPLE POWER. 8-)

Add a note here you have done that if you wish - but even if it stays private please do assist, we/you owe Yuriy a LOT. :!:

I resist the now WEEKLY sales pitches from global ad companies aiming to 'OPTIMISE' this site with endless intrusive pop up ads, distracting 'click bait' links all over, ads inside every post, IP tracking, cookie tracking requirements, and all sorts of nasty bells and whistles that would make me rather rich - but drive most users here insane! THEY see the huge traffic here, and that is their bread and butter. I sign up to none of that, as I personally hate all of that, and assume others do too. If they add that stuff in, I make a fortune, and then can offer an 'ad free stampboards' option at $US50 a year, and many would leap at that too, and I make another fortune! So get ahead of the pack, and PayPal Yuri $US20-$US25 now, and you are more than revenue neutral! It is a simple choice really. yuriy [at] rusko.org :!:

Hopefully the "place-inline" behaviour default for images can be solved or streamlined, as that really is as common issue for new members - and not so new ones!

I have this working on my local system now, I think, but want to test more before deploying as it has the capacity to break things.

I'll be on a small vacation in Canada for a week, and will pick it back up upon returning.

As always, still reachable in the event of an emergency.

Hello Yuriy = Marshalrusty.

Recently I've been getting the following message from time to time when I'm attempting to submit a post I've been editing, even when it subsequently turns out that the submitted post has actually been added. I wonder: are others also getting similar messages, or is it specific to my posting?

Screenshot 2023-08-07 at 7.10.50 pm.png

Apologies for posting here — I don't have the suggested detailed documentary data to submit a formal report. Immediately after getting such a message, the preoccupation is with completing the interrupted post, and after that, reconstructing the precise actions which preceded the message is not feasible.

If had the same thing; but if I reload the page it acts just as if there had been no interruption. It's almost as if the server stopped to think :D

Internal Server Error

Post by AdmiralCollector »

The last 3 or 4 days, I've been getting several Internal Server error messages every time I browse various threads on StampBoards. The latest one was on the "Share the most CURIOUS stamp designs you have ever seen globally?" thread. I refreshed the page, and the text returned but not the pictures. I quit StampBoards and started all over, and everything worked fine. Anyone else have this problem lately? If so, perhaps the Administration needs to know about it.

A quick Google search seems to say the problem is not an issue with my computer.

When that happens click on the refresh/reload this page tab. You may have to do it twice.

Has been reported to Yuriy .. he must have run out of Pizzas.

As he posted above, he has been on vacation in Canada.

'There are no free lunches in life.' Members funding some Beer and Pizzas now, who this issue bothers, will I am sure get this to the top of his list to look at, when he returns.

Hi folks,

Sorry about that. I'm monitoring the situation, but so far have been unable to reproduce the exact issue. I've reset things, so hopefully smooth sailing from here. Intermittent problems are the hardest to diagnose.

Hope you enjoyed your holiday Yuriy. This stamp issue from Great Britain came out while you were away.

So twice today, I got another error when trying to log in to Stamp Boards.
I put in my name and password, click on the LOGIN button, and this appears:

Ever since my last windows update ive been having problems and usually f5 resolves it. Needs to be done each time pops up.

Im also having trouble at work with our payroll software on one of the older win10 pcs after an update.

Doesn't seem to happen on my Android systems.

Blast, ok, now its happening on Android.

Hi,

I can confirm that there is a load issue. It would appear that the site is currently being DDoSed. It wasn't happening when I checked it last, but there are currently a lot of hits. Working on it.

Great work Yuriy .. I use the board 18 hours a day, and right now the issue is truly MINIMAL, and a ton better than recent days - many thanks!

Have only seen one incidence of it all day. :!:

Some avatars were not loading, nor some valid inline attachments.

Beers and Pizzas are due from those who many who were complaining about the tech issues this week.

I've noted the 'visitors' in the past week or so at any time are often about 1,500 or 2,000 - a unusually high number.

For members not aware of what we are experiencing -

'A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt the normal traffic of a targeted server, service or network by overwhelming the target or its surrounding infrastructure with a flood of Internet traffic.'

Okay, mitigation steps have been taken. Settings have been tweaked. Hopefully that should do it.

I'll be checking on it to make sure all is well.
