My name is Sean White and I received a new kidney on March 21, 2022!

March 29, 2022

One week post transplant and while it's a slow road to recovery, I'm getting a little better every day. They say that by around 3 months post transplant I should be back up to full speed. This means that, for the first time in a decade+, I will actually feel my age. And, after nearly 17 years of this journey, I'll get to start a whole new one.

Thank you everyone who wished me well and helped spread my message. It really has helped me thorough this.

We discovered my kidney disease, IgA Nephropathy, in 2004. At the time it was pretty benign and we spent years taking action to try and slow it's progress. This included various medications and a change in diet. As the years went on the disease slowly degraded my kidneys. We tried 2 different high dose steroid treatments that were both horrible experiences but may have helped slow things down for a time.

In 2019, my numbers creeped downward and so I went down to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago to start the preliminary steps for kidney transplant as well as learning more about it. A few months later my kidney function crossed below the 20% threshold resulting in me being officially added to the transplant wait list.

Last week I found out I had a matching living donor, and today I got a surgery date. Monday, March 21. While I don’t know who the donor is right now, I’ll get to meet them next week, on Monday. And after 16+ years of a journey, I’m excited to get on to this next part. I’m not really sure what the recovery will entail, but I’ll know more after Monday.

So for now, life is going to be about getting prepped, going to appointments and killing time. Hoping these next 3 weeks go by fast.

I really appreciate all the efforts people have gone to get my message out there. I have had so much support from people I barely know, and it’s humbling. Thank you all.

Right off the top, my transplant coordinator has let me know that we can do a soft pause on the look for a living donor. They have several potentials to work through and that could take months. That is good-ish news, but we've been there before and ended up with no matching donor at that time.

Dialysis is going well. It's been a bit of an adjustment, but it is proving to be beneficial. One of my bigger concerns was that I would need to be driven to and from the clinic 3 days a week, but I am tolerating it very well with little negative side effects. While I still don't have a whole lot of energy, I'm no longer constantly tired. Additionally, I'm not constantly cold. The biggest adjustment has been that I'm supposed to limit my fluid intake to 32 oz per day. It's been a struggle as I could commonly drink 4 times that amount in a day. But with that change, dialysis has pulled of 13 pounds of water that I was just carrying around as swelling in various parts of my body. I have cut out all coffee and tea and suffered a couple weeks of headaches from caffeine withdrawal. I was oblivious to that coloration until my wife pointed that out. One perk is that I no longer have to get up to go to the bathroom 2-3 times a night. As well, there is some irony in diet changes. Many of the previous limitations are the same, but where I was supposed to limit my animal protein to slow the damage to my kidneys, I now need to take in lots of protein. So that gives me more food options than before. Another 7 weeks before the fistula in my arm is strong enough to be stabbed with an 1/8" needle several times a week. But the surgeon is very happy with how it's doing.

The transplant team had halted the evaluation process for donors in January to avoid this latest COVID surge. They say they will be back at it next week and there had been mention of a 'strong potential' donor. So, we just keep on, keeping on.

On the day of my fistula surgery, my kidney doctor decided that it was also time to start dialysis. A few hours after the first surgery they installed a port in my chest that runs under my skin and enters a vein in my neck. Ideally, I would have been admitted that night to begin my first dialysis session but all the beds are full from COVID patients. Get your damn vaccine so if you do get COVID you can stay home when you are sick to let people who don't have avoidable issues to get the the care they need. Two days later I was able to got to a dialysis center to have my first treatment. It lasted 2 hours, without incident.

So now, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday I'll spend 4 hours a day hooked up to a tube covered box that sounds like a dishwasher. I will have to do this until I'm able to get a new kidney. The fistula will take up to 3 months to develop properly for dialysis use. Until then, I have to get creative to make sure I keep up on hygiene while keeping the port dry, to avoid infection. This is a huge change to have to make and it may last for years. Please consider donating or at least share my story.

November 19, 2021

Last month the transplant team, located in Chicago, Illinois USA, eliminated all of the potential living donor candidates, and we are now actively searching for a matching donor. And while this month my kidney function is 11% again, we've decided to proceed with dialysis. The first step will be having a fistula created in my arm to facilitate the process. That is a surgery that will connect a vein and artery in my arm. This will allow for adequate in/out blood flow for dialysis. We scheduled that surgery for late December. It will take 6-8 weeks to heal and from there I expect to start dialysis 3 days a week for 3-4 hours each of those days until I'm able to find a kidney. This will be a huge change of life, but a necessary one. This was something I was really hoping to avoid, but we have yet to find a matching donor. So now, more than ever, we need to find me a kidney.

October 18, 2021

As of today, October 18, 2021, I am ever closer to complete kidney failure.

The latest months have been continuing to decline slowly, 14%, 13%, 11%, and 12%. Sadly, the transplant team eliminated all of the potential living donor candidates, and we are now actively searching for a matching donor. I expect my kidney doctor will want me put on dialysis soon. At this point, I think it's unavoidable.

It would be greatly appreciated if you would share my story or sign up to be a potential donor.

August 10, 2021

As of today, August 10, 2021, I am stable at 14% kidney function.

The last 4 months have been stable at 15%, 15%, 14%, and 14%. The transplant team is still evaluating living donors that have volunteered. I still feel about the same so there isn't an immediate need to start dialysis, and I'm really hoping to avoid it entirely.

I'm going to continue posting less frequent updates until something changes one way or another. For now, no news is not bad news, it's just nothing new to report. And we keep on, keeping on.

I am still so thankful for everyone who has applied to be a donor or shared my story. I know I'm in a position that gives me opportunities to get the word out, that most people don't have.

May 12, 2021

As of today, May 12, 2021, I am stable at 15% kidney function.

While this number technically puts me in stage 5 kidney failure, it's really just a tiny bit worse than before and basically stable. Transplant team is still evaluating potential donors, so for now there is not really much I can do for now. Hopefully the current potential donor being evaluated is proceeding through the process expeditiously. So again, this means that we don't need to push to find more potentials, right now. Not much else to share for now.

April 13, 2021

As of today, April 13, 2021, I am stable at 16/17% kidney function.

I did blood work twice this month. The first time it was 16% and second 17%. My doctor just wanted to check if it was a trend or normal fluctuation. He would like put me on dialysis before I would start to show symptoms the final stage of kidney failure. Thankfully, not there yet. Haven't heard anything new from the transplant team, which means they are still working on evaluating a current potential donor. So again, this means that we don't need to push to find more potentials, right now. Got my 2nd COVID vaccine shot, which is awesome.

March 8, 2021

As of today, March 8, 2021, I am slightly worse at 17% kidney function.

Back down to 17% means I'm stable, for now. The transplant team has let me know that they are working though a pool of potential donors. They are in the process of evaluating them, one person at a time. This means that we don't need to push to find more potentials, right now. This is really great news and has lightened my spirits. As well, I was able to get the first COVID vaccine shot only 1 day after being added to Phase 1b. It's been a great help in reducing my anxiety about leaving the house.

February 5, 2021

As of today, February 5, 2021, I am slightly improved at 19% kidney function.

2% improved really just means I'm stable, for the moment. So in spite of all the overwhelming trend in my numbers for the last 6+ months, my kidneys said "Maybe next month." And while, in the long run, this is good, it's still exhausting to be so close to the next phase of life, but not there yet. Month after month, bracing for an impact that 'never' comes.

Thankfully I have been receiving an overwhelming amount of from all over the world. It's really amazing that people on other continents want to see if they are a match for me. It is no small task to go through the evaluation process and then eventually surgery. In addition many more people are helping out by sharing my situation even further online. I'm not really sure how many people have signed up, but the more that do, the better the chance of finding a good match.

As well, I am continually thankful that I have an amazing local support network of both doctors and family. Most people in my situation aren't as fortunate.

Life will be a little easier once I can get the COVID vaccine, but I'm phase 1c, and currently my area is still working on distributing to phase 1b. Cat, my wife, is in phase 1b but so far has been unable to find an open slot to schedule for. Hopefully that can get sorted out sooner then later.

So, for now, we try to stay safe and healthy and wait until next month's blood work to show us what's next.

January 10, 2021

It’s been 5 months since the last update. My kidney function was stable at around 23% for over a year. Reaching 20%, or lower, was the magical number that put me on the transplant list back in 2019. It’s important to get on it as soon as possible because the wait time for a deceased donor is 6-8 years in this area. So, being on the transplant list isn’t enough to get approval for a transplant, however. In November 2020 my kidney function started to go down again.

In December and January, my numbers dropped to 19% and now 17% kidney function. At the current rate of decline, I will likely hit 15% in 4-6 weeks. So it appears that the day is imminently approaching, and I am anxious about its implications. Once my kidney function drops to 15%, or below, I will qualify for the funding that will cover the cost of the transplant, and we can move forward with that. But that is assuming that I have a living donor available. Currently I still feel okay, so even if a matching donor is not found right away, I will be able to avoid needing dialysis initially.

I know there were a few amazingly generous people who registered back in 2019 when I first got on the list, but I don’t know if those individuals are currently able/willing/available to donate, or if they are a good match. So I think it’s time to ask again: If you would consider donating a kidney, please learn more about the process at the first link below and register at the second link below.

This is my monthly status and request for a living kidney donor. Please share this.

On July 9, 2019 I was put on the kidney transplant waiting list. Wait time, in this region, for a deceased donor kidney is 6-8 years.

As of today, August 20, 2020, I am at 23% kidney function.

At this point, I'm going to do less frequent updates. I'll still get monthly blood work, but my numbers have been stable for almost a year. So I'll update this site less frequently, unless there is a notable change in my health. I really appreciate all those who have already signed up, but thankfully it's not needed yet. As always, we keep on keeping on.

I’ve got a good network of doctors and a lot of support. So I keep on, keeping on. Please consider signing up to be a donor, if you don’t match me you could be a match for someone else.

For those of you who have already signed up, Thank You Very Much! I don’t know if we will be a match but the more people who sign up, the better chance there will be one. It is a huge undertaking to go through the donation process. It is no small act, and I do appreciate those who have already signed up.

This is my monthly status and request for a living kidney donor. Please share this.

On July 9, 2019 I was put on the kidney transplant waiting list. Wait time, in this region, for a deceased donor kidney is 6-8 years.

As of today, July 10, 2020, I am at 23% kidney function.

It’s been one year since I was put on the kidney transplant waiting list. 20% and lower puts you on the list. After dietary changes, I've been maintaining 23-25% kidney function since then. I still get tired super easily and sticking to my low animal protein, low sodium diet, is a struggle sometimes, but taking it easy and keeping myself distracted helps a lot.

And while I don’t need a donor immediately, I currently have a 5-7 year wait for a deceased donor kidney. So it is still important to find a living donor for when the time comes. 15% function is considered end stage kidney failure and typically requires transplant or dialysis by that time. With a living donor I can immediately have a transplant once I hit 15%. I really don’t want to be on dialysis as it has a massive impact on my life and the people around me. And while a new kidney typically shows a marked improvement overall, it comes with a new cocktail of immunosuppressants and anti rejection drugs. This is especially worrisome in this new era of pandemics. The ideal situation is to hold out above 15% as long as possible and then get a living donor.

I’ve got a good network of doctors and a lot of support. So I keep on, keeping on. Please consider signing up to be a donor, if you don’t match me you could be a match for someone else.

As of today, June 14, 2020, I am at 24% kidney function. While my health has been very stable, 2020 is really getting to be an emotional draining year. Racism is just stupid. We're just people and everybody should have the same rights and freedoms regardless of race or skin color. And all people, civilians or those in authority, should be held accountable for their actions. As well, I really hope to see some positive change come out of all of this.

As of today, February 10, 2020, I am at 24% kidney function. Got lunches pretty much ironed out. I prep 9 lunches and freeze them. I'm doing an excellent job of keeping sodium low and no animal protein. In other news, I'm on a different med for my acid reflux and it feels like a game changer. No more nausea and I pretty much never get reflux anymore. It's amazing to find out that while the previous one managed it okay, this is so much better. The process of verifying a living donor takes time. The sooner the evaluation process starts the better it will be once I am in imminent need of a new kidney.

This is my monthly status and request for a living kidney donor. Please share this.

On July 9, 2019 I was put on the kidney transplant waiting list. Wait time, in this region, for a deceased donor kidney is 6-8 years.

As of today, November 9, 2019, I am at 23% kidney function. Basically the same as last month. It really feels weird that what I'm doing is working for the time being. After that slow decline for months and now I'm staying pretty stable. I mean it's not all sunshine and roses. It's been a struggle to try and figure out healthy and reasonably easy food choices. This month I discovered I hate chickpeas. But we keep on, keeping on.

As of today, October 3, 2019, I am at 24% kidney function, again. This is the sort of thing that counts aa 'good news'. Stable labs are always good. Hard to say what in particular I'm doing to maintain my kidney health, but I'm sticking to my low animal protein and low sodium diet. I'm happy to get numbers like these as long as I can.

As of today, September 6, 2019, I am at 24% kidney function. I am baffled at the slight improvement, as this last weekend Cat and I had our annual mini blacksmithing vacation and I didn't adhere to my diet very well. But slightly better is good. And the longer before I need transplant or dialysis is a good thing. Regardless of these results, I'm still sticking with my no animal protein and low sodium diet for breakfast and lunch.
