VCA Master of Theatre
(Writing) Presentations 2021

Dear Kathryn,

These presentations enable graduating Master of Theatre (Writing) students to present a reading of their work to the public. As with last year, Covid has presented its challenges but also helped forge unique bonds and awareness amongst the cohort. This year, all of the readings apart from one webinar will be presented live at VCA in front of an audience.

There are twelve Master of Theatre (Writing) students in this current program of readings. Each writer has pursued their personal vision in a form that best expresses their unique voice. It has been a gruelling year for the Writing students, but despite the difficulties presented by virtual learning and prolonged isolation from peers and supporters, the writers have been able to produce unique performance texts in a variety of mediums that reflects their skill, inventiveness, courage, self-belief, dedication and capacity for sheer hard work.

Ten of this year's writers have chosen to write plays or performance texts in a variety of forms, one has written a film script, and one a musical theatre script with dialogue and lyrics. Each of these works has been developed through an in-depth writing and dramaturgical process that is seeded in Semester 1, then written, developed and dramaturged in Semester 2.

These presentations are a collaboration between Postgraduate students in Writing, Directing, Dramaturgy and also students from the 2nd and 3rd year Acting cohort, as well as volunteers from 1st year Acting in the Theatre stream, and some non-student external performers. A huge thank you to VCA Theatre staff, Eric, Genevieve, Tiana and Naomi and support team, and the students for their assistance in making this event happen.

Raimondo Cortese
Coordinator, Master of Theatre (Writing)

We respectfully acknowledge the people of the Boonwurrung and the Woi Wurrung, who have danced their dances, sung their songs and lived their culture on this land for tens of thousands of years.
