What was the story NZ 1898 Pictorials with corner diagonal line CTO?

I recall it is noted somewhere these diagonal lines were CTOs for some purpose - can someone remind for what purpose please?

Bought this superb 5/- 1898 Mt. Cook stamp SG 259, decades back and forget the story! (Stock 542AX)

Were they done in London or in NZ?

Thanks in Advance.

Glen,

This was a presentation example. This and various other stamps in the series etc were thus cancelled and made in to presentation sets. These were then given away to dignitaries etc.

I understand, though have yet to receive, that these + SPECIMEN handstamps applied by the NZ PO are listed in the latest CP supplements, so hopefully they are priced as well.

They are also found on the earlier Sideface issues.

They will be when the latest pages are printed! Auckland is still in lockdown and most things there cannot operate under the current level 4 lockdown. When Auckland moves out of level 4, maybe the pages will be printed and distributed before long.

Incidentally, your beloved Gladys does not seem to know what a proper lockdown is, and as for her not fronting up for a media brief …. Goodness only knows how you lot ended up with her? As you no doubt are well aware some other States have the right idea, re coronavirus, unlike Gladys.

So, we all have to wait for Auckland to have fewer cases of coronavirus before we get to see the pages and prices therein.

Thanks for the on the ground update there David .. please post the price here if you do not mind when the new pages come to hand.

I'll hold off listing it, as one assumes these, like our scarcer Roo CTOs are often rated several times a normal used?

Agree COVID is a pain for us all - at least my Post Office has never closed here .. I did read many did in NZ recently?

Postal services in general, are operating as per normal.

Many NZ households only have mail delivered thrice weekly. Whilst l live in a rural area, l am fortunate that mail is delivered 5x weekly (assuming that there is any mail) and parcels on Saturdays. This also means that l can have my outwards mail collected from my letterbox 6 days per week!

Here are a couple of pages (unfortunately only scans of a photocopy record) from Marcel Stanley's colection which you might find of interest:

Thanks Chippin .. . most useful scans. :D

Has the CP cat supplement been issued yet that David references above? My old CP has this at CPE 21e as $1,500 as VFU, whatever they regard that as!

SG 259 is £475=$A950 for normal used, so I'll think I'll put into stock at $A550. Must be the finest CTO copy existing. :)

Sorry but I forgot about this post.

In CP's latest supplement there are prices given for various 1898 pictorial essays, trade samples, die proofs and plate proofs.

In addition mention is made of punched SPECIMEN stamps and presentation copies, like your 5/- Mount Cook, but unfortunately without any pricing guides.

Thanks, David ... that is strange to finally list them but not price them!

Not rocket science, surely? :)
