Yoga and ayurveda as keys for aging beautifully
While advanced age is revered by some, very few of us are in a hurry to get there. This guide treats physical well-being and spiritual growth as two sides of a coin. It is custom-crafted for midlife and later by addressing both eternal verities and physical health. Yoga, the time-honored philosophy of which headstands and downward-facing dogs are only a fragment, doesn’t sugarcoat: physical life will end and material joys, as lovely as they can be, are temporary. In acknowledging our true nature, the eternal divinity that is our essence, we have the best shot at well-being on every level.
This book explores spiritual awakening yoga-style, and the fundamentals of yoga’s sister science, ayurveda, for care of the body. No one is too young to take up these practices, and no one is too old either. Asana practice, the “physical exercise” component of the spiritual adventure of yoga, is fully adaptable to anybody of any age. And the mental and spiritual practices of yoga need no adaptations.
Age Like a Yogi not only gives the reader immediately applicable tools for spiritual awareness and physical health in the post-fifty decades, but also a way to leave this world kinder, safer, saner, and a little more beautiful.

In my life, aging like a yogi incorporates what I’ve learned studying spiritual systems with their roots in India (including yoga, theosophy, Vedanta—clearly different for scholars, but one lovely, expansive teaching for me), as well as Christian and Jewish mysticism, the 12 Step programs, and New Thought, the late 19th-century American movement that brought to the fore such concepts as positive thinking and the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit. If something suggested in this book doesn’t resonate with you, move on to the next idea. Back burners are ideal places for slow-simmered stews and for notions that could—maybe someday, maybe not—turn out to be delicious.
Out of respect for yoga tradition, I'll provide the names that these concepts were given in the original Sanskrit. The English follows immediately, though, so you’ll never find yourself lost in translation. When it comes to yoga asanas or postures, however, I'll generally stick with English. These terms are in the vernacular of Western exercise, so let's keep things simple. In addition, we’ll stay with the practically applicable aspects of teachings that can go very deep indeed.
This purpose of this book is not necessarily to turn you into a “yoga person” unless you already are one, or yoga captures your imagination so thoroughly that you want to immerse yourself in it. My aim here is to familiarize you with the grammar of yoga so you can start right away to apply select elements to rejuvenate your body and uplift your life. For example, you don't have to do formal breath control exercises to breathe a little more deeply and consciously on your walk tomorrow morning.
Many of the tips I’ll offer about the care of our physical selves come from yoga’s sister science, ayurveda, which means “knowledge of life.” These two bodies of wisdom grew up alongside each other. Despite the prevailing contemporary view that yoga is only a way to exercise, an alternative to Pilates or barre classes, it was, and is, primarily about spiritual growth. Its well-known postures came into being late in its history as a means to develop a body that would harmoniously house an evolving spirit.

About the authors
I’ve written for publication since I was a teenager—teen mags first, then health food store and vegetarian publications, and spiritual journals. I’ve written 13 books about well-being, spirituality, and Vegan living. My proposed 14th, Age Like a Yogi, is in the beginning stages (prayers ongoing for the perfect publisher). VegNews magazine listed me among the Top 10 Living Vegetarian Authors, and I was on Oprah twice which, at that time, was like being initiated as a genuine writer.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI am familiar with Victoria Moran’s other work and was quite delighted to learn from her in Age Like a Yogi. I am a yogi too, but for the most part, until recently, it was primarily a form of exercise. This book takes the concepts of yoga and gives them a deeper meaning. I have also largely been unfamiliar with ayurveda save a few concepts like the doshas. Age Like a Yogi offered me some concrete ideas as well as some deeper ideas that I will return to. Ms. Moran’s writing is clear and oftentimes light and funny, even when she’s sharing a deeper concept. It will do me good to heed her advice in this book if I wish to age like her. She’s youthful in body and mind and I suspect spirit too. I recommend this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI practice yoga but didn't know alot about the philisophy behind the movements, this book taought me alot. Especially that I have alot of "vata" energy! When you read it, you'll find out your energy type.
Age Like a Yogi is not only for looking younger or living longer, but also for taking that frequent breath, centering in gratitude, and developing an unshakable sense of inner peace.
Victoria weaves in personal stories, practical advice, and profound yogic principles that make this book so much more than just another guide to healthy aging.
She reminds us that growing older is not something to fear, but rather an opportunity to recognize hard won wisdom. A note to all our younger friends, that wisdom is coming a little bit each day usually from all the bangs, dents and epiphanies, don’t worry, it’s coming!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase"Age Like a Yogi" by Victoria Moran is one of those rare gems that I had to experience in both audio and physical formats. It's like an enjoyable schoolbook I didn’t want to put down. Why? Because Victoria isn’t just sharing insights; she’s teaching life lessons that feel like well-kept secrets (at least to my layman self). But here’s the magic: she delivers these pearls of wisdom with wit, humor, and a warmth that makes even the deepest truths feel accessible. It's a joyful journey that keeps you engaged, enlightened, and entertained right to the last page (or minute if you're listening to the audio book which I also give a thumbs up to!!).

Drawing on her innate wisdom and extensive life experience, Victoria Moran offers powerful yet gentle guidance about embracing an integrated yoga practice that goes beyond physical exercise, to include diet, living rightly (dharma), creating a domestic spiritual environment, meditation, healing, relationship, journaling, spiritual study and harmlessness (ahimsa). - Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI've been waiting for this wonderful book for a long time. I've read and loved several other books by this author, including special favorites "Shelter for the Spirit," "Younger by the Day" and "Fit From Within." I'm also a proud graduate of Victoria's Main Street Vegan Academy, a life-changing learning adventure. I could go on and on, but about her latest book......wow!! I've dabbled in Ayurveda and yoga, but it never took for me, until.........reading "Age Like a Yogi." Victoria makes it accessible and fun, with her compassionate, down-to-earth and witty way of presenting. You really feel like a friend is sitting with you and telling you all about it. I don't know Sanskrit, but the terms are presented, followed by easy to digest translation. I highly recommend this book, her 14th (and somehow each one is different!). And I highly recommend attending Victoria's Mainstreet Academy, now presented online, with access to brilliant chefs, doctors, entrepreneurs and animal experts of all sorts.

Victoria Moran’s warmth and wisdom make this a brilliant resource that celebrates the potential for each of us to age well in our own way. My book already has so many sections underlined, and page corners turned that I know I’ll be referring back to it over and over again.
