Guiding Questions for AT Considerations
Assistive technology device refers to any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether
acquired commercially off the shelf, modified or customized, used to increase, maintain, or improve the
functional capabilities of students with disabilities. The term does not include a medical device that is
surgically implanted, or the replacement of such device.
Consideration is a discussion that takes place during every IEP team meeting using known information
and results to inform a decision regarding assistive technology already being used, trying different assistive
technology or discontinuing assistive technology currently in place.
All Individual Education Plan (IEP) teams must consider whether a student with a disability requires assistive
technology devices and services.
To assist IEP teams with the consideration process, IEP teams should use the “Guiding Questions for
Considerations” to gather information to make an informed decision when using the AT Considerations
Worksheet. The Guiding Questions for Consideration and the AT Considerations Worksheet can be found

Guiding Questions for Consideration of Assistive Technology at IEP meetings:
1. What is it we want the student to be able to do
within the student’s educational program
(writing, reading, communicating, seeing,
hearing that the student is not able to do
because of their disability?
