Re: VALE - ARTHUR GRAY, Sydney.
The service today was memorable with most probably the largest philatelic attendance ever in Australia for a funeral service. Arthur would have been proud that such a throng would attend, many from interstate. As a guess I would think that the attendance was just over 200.
His life story was amazing, from humble beginnings, his father was a PO clerk living in Bankstown through to his rising through the ranks of BHP and then going out on his own with various enterprises and he was successful in all of his enterprises.
His happy smile and friendly banter will be missed,
David B.
added,
before I forget, the service ended with the playing of Arthur's favourite song, Johnny O'Keefe's, The Wild One.

I am sure you are right David.
A wonderful service, and Gary Watson, Geoff Lewis and I were among the last to enter the Chapel so we ended up upstairs.
No Psalms, Hymns and Bible recitations etc (thank goodness IMHO) - just humorous addresses from the family, and a nice long one from ACCC President Michael Drury (to right in this photo on podium) outlining much of Arthur's philatelic history. (Photos taken discreetly with no flash.)

Re: VALE - ARTHUR GRAY, Sydney.
David - that phrase was the hook line of The Byrds 1964 Number One hit "Turn. Turn, Turn" and all there knew this, I am sure.
"Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There Is a Season)" — often abbreviated to "Turn! Turn! Turn!" — is a song written by Pete Seeger in the late 1950s. The lyrics, except for the title which is repeated throughout the song, and the final verse of the song, are adapted word-for-word from Chapter 3 of the Book of Ecclesiastes, set to music and recorded in 1962.
The song became an international hit in late 1965 when it was covered by the American folk rock band The Byrds, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on December 4, 1965. The song holds distinction as the #1 hit song with the oldest lyrics (Book of Ecclesiastes), theoretically authored by King Solomon.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turn!_Turn!_Turn!
A truly great service I thought, totally down to earth, with no pretension, and totally no nonsense - just like Arthur himself was in life. And he asked that Johnny O'Keefe "The Wild One" be played as well, which neatly sums up Arthur in my view. 8)
The only other remotely religious aspect in the entire Service Program was the reading at the very end of it, of the famous - "Irish Blessing" which is a favourite of mine too -

Such Tributes are removed after a month normally, so stampboards today paid to keep it visible to all FOREVER, which seemed more practical and useful than sending flowers.

What a nice gesture, and I'll add a comment, as I see others here have done, and far more sensible than another floral tribute etc.

Someone just asked me if there was Funeral Card in Arthur's memory yesterday, and the answer of course was YES.

Re: VALE - ARTHUR GRAY, Sydney.
After the Funeral Service there was a public "Wake" in the Centre to farewell Arthur in accordance with his specific wishes. There was a far smaller gathering later on, at the family home in St. Ives.
Youngest daughter Rebecca said during the service: "Dad said he wanted a bloody ripper of a Wake, so let's give him one today".
I took a few photos of the many attendees at the first "Wake".
From left to right - Dr Geoff Kellow, Editor of ACSC Catalogues talking to Melbourne dealer Richard Juzwin. At far right is well know dealer/collector Rodney Perry who flew down from Cairns.

His family was obviously quite receptive to his interest in philately, adding the £2 Kangaroo to the reverse of the funeral card. Someone of such a position in the stamp community couldn't really keep it a secret a la Sir Gawaine Baillie after all.

I was told that whilst they were sorting out some of Arthur's material that they came across envelopes with the words " Junk ", " Rubbish ", Not Worth Anything ", etc. whilst some others were marked " Very Valuable ", " Rare ", Exciting New Find ", etc.
Anyone who knew Arthur would realise what was inside would be exactly the opposite but burglars would go for what was written on the envelope,

I only met Arthur a few times. He was just a humble man that always had time to talk to anybody. He was a giant in Australian collecting, who never showed any airs or graces. A lovely man who will be missed by many.

Martin W tells he was indeed talking about 'Arthur'. But FDC and Aerophilately legend Arthur BERGEN who also passed away, not Arthur Gray.David Benson wrote:I was told that whilst they were sorting out some of Arthur's material that they came across envelopes with the words " Junk ", " Rubbish ", Not Worth Anything ", etc. whilst some others were marked " Very Valuable ", " Rare ", Exciting New Find ", etc.

That "life hack" alone is a valuable contribution to philately.Global Administrator wrote:Mind you, a pretty smart "anti-burglar" tactic when you think on it.
Or there's the patented Glen method--have everything in such a disordered array that it would be pot luck for the burglar to grab a sackful and hope to make off with anything of huge value.

Re: VALE - ARTHUR GRAY, Sydney. 1939-2015
In the mid 1970's, John Gartner RDP said he was winding down Hawthorn Press his publishing and printing business, and I expressed my enthusiasm for purchasing the Australian Commonwealth Specialists’ Catalogue, edited in those years by Perc Meara.
I had plans to add it to the list of my Seven Seas Stamps publications, and to broaden its readership and circulation. John and I had a good relationship, and I became the new publisher of the ACSC.
In my earlier retail stamp dealing years I constantly had customers complaining they could not understand the complexity of the catalogue listing of scores of One Penny red shades.
I decided to simplify the listing to attract more collectors to this fascinating stamp, and almost halved the number of shades in the next edition of the catalogue.
From the day the new edition appeared there was uproar from 1d red specialists at the desecration of the decades long listing of shades and other unnecessary (in my view) stamps. Letters of protest poured in, and the original listing was promptly restored in the next edition! I had learned a valuable life lesson - (if it ain't broken, don't try to fix it).
Many years later I was chatting with Arthur Gray about his Commonwealth collecting current interests, and he told me of his fascination with the Penny Reds. He recounted how "some clown" had decimated the shade listings in an earlier edition of the ACSC, and the ensuing outcry saw the full range of shades restored.
Being a good Catholic I confessed. Without missing a beat Arthur wryly commented "don't know why you ever did it" and we carried on our conversation.
Arthur was a generous student and teacher always happy to share his knowledge ..... something not all collectors are prepared to do.
I well remember accompanying Ken Baker when he went to pick up one of the finest studies of the 5/- Kangaroo mint only ever assembled, for which he had previously made an offer, from a specialist in this issue .... when Ken asked for all the research notes assembled over years of studying the issue, so they could be passed on to the buyer of the collection, he was told in effect, "No way. It took me hundreds of hours of research, let whomever buys the stamps do their own research"

Re: VALE - ARTHUR GRAY, Sydney. 1939-2015
After all that has been said, my contribution here can only be very small, as I did not know Arthur really well, however we did meet a number of times over the years and always found him to be an absolute gentleman.
He was very encouraging to me in the early years of my editing and ownership of Stamp News, and at one time he expressed an interest in either acquiring or at least becoming part owner, and there were some exploratory talks on the telephone. He had recently sold his main business and was itching to take on something new.
However that was not to be, as Arthur very soon got into negotiations with Rod Perry, and together with Paul Fletcher purchased Rod's auction business and the ACSC catalogues.
These became Millennium Auctions and Brusden White Publishing, and during the time that Arthur was involved in those businesses became one of the biggest supporters of Stamp News, both as advertisers and as a supplier of their catalogues at very attractive rates.
Rod Perry is producing a full page obituary for the July edition of Stamp News, and I hope that many of you will have the opportunity to read that.
Arthur, you may be no longer with us, but you certainly will not be forgotten.

RIP Arthur Gray. A real philatelic giant and gent.
I was catching up with Stampboards news for the first time in a month and had just finished enjoying the info on Arthur Grays upcoming sale of KGV stamps when I scrolled down to see the news of his passing. From a philatelic high to a desperate low in one computer screen.
I bumped into Arthur Gray at the PhilaKorea event in 2009 and had the pleasure to go to Melbourne 2013 where I could say hello again.
Viewing his exhibits was both inspiring and daunting, but shows what can be achieved with dedication.
My condolences to his family and friends.

Re: VALE - ARTHUR GRAY, Sydney. 1939-2015
I was at a funeral today and my mind reached back to Arthur Grey's standing room only funeral near 10 years back.
His good friend Michael Drury, the well known stamp expert shown here top right at the rostrum in this photo I took, gave the most wonderful account of anyone's background I've ever seen, and really wished someone had recorded it for posterity. It was very lengthy, and wonderfully articulated.
Out of interest, the senior cop Roger Rogerson, who had Drury shot and near killed through a window at his home, and placed into a 12 day coma, passed away in prison this week. Rogerson tried to have him shot again whist recovering in hospital.
https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/shot-former-drug-squad-d ... p84xu.html
Hardly a week goes by where I do not type, or see typed, 'ex Arthur Gray' on superb stamp material. What a legacy.
What a loss to this hobby of THE most larger than life characters ever in it.
