Advisory Council

ADVISORY COUNCIL MEMBER DESCRIPTION AND EXPECTATIONS

PURPOSE: The Advisory Council has been organized to: 

1. Advise the Board of Directors and Executive Director regarding policies, programs and actions of the Community for Positive Aging, including those affecting the delivery of services under contract with funding sources, and;  

2. Advocate on behalf of our constituents, and; 

3. Review and comment on policies, programs, and actions of other agencies that affect older people. 

OUR MISSION: Community for Positive Aging is a caring and healthy organization that encourages intergenerational relationships, recognizes the wisdom and experience of its elders, and demonstrates awareness and respect for the aging process. Seniors have access to a full spectrum of services, including social, emotional, educational, and recreational opportunities appropriate to their unique needs and interests. We value, appreciate and encourage the important contributions of older adults in our community and empower people of all ages to achieve happy, healthy aging.

CfPA was founded as Hollywood Senior Center in 1973, a nonprofit committed to creating an uplifting and vibrant environment for adults 55 and older while providing a channel for intergenerational relationships and learning.  In July 2021, HSC expanded by absorbing The Giving Tree, another not-for-profit organization, committed to providing residential services to people living in affordable housing, including access to culturally-specific food, throughout Portland; merger of these two organizations form CfPA.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Advise on policies and procedures  

  • Advise of program planning and evaluation 

  • Review of organizational and programmatic reports 

  • Promotion of the organization within the Center and greater community

  • Fundraising and outreach 

  • Represent the Center within the Center and greater community 

  • Bring ideas and concerns from the greater community to the Council

  • Support advocacy efforts for senior services 

LENGTH OF TERM: 

Terms are two years and may be renewed two times (for a total of 6 years of service). Council members must take a one-year break from service on the Council after that time before rejoining.  

MEETINGS AND TIME COMMITMENT: 

The Advisory Council currently meets monthly in-person on the 1st Wednesday of the month from 1:00 - 3:00pm. Ad-Hoc and other Committees meet as needed.

EXPECTATIONS OF ADVISORY COUNCIL MEMBERS: 

  • Attend and participate in meetings on a regular basis, and special events as possible. Meetings are currently hybrid at the center and via zoom. 

  • Serve on ad-hoc committees as necessary. 

  • Be alert to community concerns that can be addressed by the Community for Positive Aging’s mission, objectives, and programs. 

  • Help communicate and promote the Community for Positive Aging’s mission and programs to the community. 

  • Become familiar with the Community for Positive Aging’s finances, budget, and  financial/resource needs. 

  • Understand the policies and procedures of the Community for Positive Aging.

  • Join the Community for Positive Aging in working toward a culture of equity and inclusivity that includes creating an open and inclusive space so that every individual has the opportunity to flourish.
