To The Administration and Trustees of Williams College,
- We, the undersigned students, alumni, faculty, and staff of Williams College, believe that climate change is a critical issue of our time, with grave implications for humans and all life on earth.
- We commend the College for its efforts to achieve the goal set in 2007 to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to 10% below 1990-1991 levels by 2020. It is time to pursue more ambitious action.
- We ask that Williams College pledge to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to 80% below 1990-1991 emissions by 2050 and set interim goals to achieve this reduction.
- This is the goal set by the state of Massachusetts and 680 institutions of higher education across the country, including nearly all our NESCAC peers.
- According to engineers on campus, this goal can be met with existing technology, and many projects will pay for themselves over time.
- The reduction goal should be part of a multifaceted plan to engage the campus in a serious conversation about climate change and to explore what Williams can do to address it.
