Title: Moonbeam

Size: L: 11 x W: 11 x H: 21.5 (inches)

Description of Piece:

I started the lamp by coiling the entire form to create the base in low fire terracotta clay. Then, I applied the Sgraffito technique, where I covered the entire piece with purple underglaze and carved an abstract design through the glaze revealing the red clay beneath. I also pierced holes on the top and bottom to of the base so I could add the hardware for the lamp through its interior. Finally, I painted the lamp shade to match the base.

Title: Crimson Blooms

Description of Piece:

I created this set of three bags with the user in mind. Each bag has unique features to keep you organized in your daily life. From the interior pocket of the shoulder bag, perfect to keep track of your phone or car keys, to the handy wrist strap of the coin purse, making it easy to keep track of your cash and cards, this set is user friendly. Made using 100% cotton, each bag is washer and dryer safe, and can be ironed. I chose this beautiful black, white and red floral print because of the sophistication and classic look it brings to any situation.

Title: Yellow Days

Size: L: 12 x W: 12 x H: 13 (inches)

Description of Piece:

Using medium fire clay, I created a base from a slab and then I used coils to build the walls. I then carved three different designs along the rim and diligently added texture all over its surface. The stand was thrown on the pottery wheel and I also carved it applying similar surface textures as the dish. The entire piece was glazed with a translucent white called sea salt, oatmeal, a bright yellow, and deep brown aventurine to give the suggestion of a sunflower. The dish and stand are two separate pieces and the bird bath was built to be outside!

Title: A Marvelous Spring Day

Media: Acrylic Paint

Size: 4 Canvases - 29 x 28 (inches)

Description of Piece:

For this set of 4 paintings, I covered the canvas with blue paint to represent the color of the sky on a sunny day creating an ombré illusion. Then, the branches of the tree are thick and long while others are thin and short to convey the uniqueness of a tree. Additionally, I used Q-tips dipped in multiple shades of red to create the suggestion of cherry blossoms. Finally, I added the silhouettes of two birds on the top left to create a focal point in the piece. In the end, I wanted to make a work of art that would remind people of a bright, sunny, and warm Spring day that spreads happiness and joy in our lives.

Title: Winding Rivers

Size: L: 7 x W: 7 x H: 9.5 (inches)

Description of Piece:

When I was in second grade, my teacher inspired me to make art and I have to say, I never stopped. It continued in middle school, high school, and carried me to college at Wentworth Institute of Technology as an interior design major. What has always inspired me was nature and I have used it to make drawings, painting, and prints and it inspires my work as I learn to design spaces. I love being outside and bringing elements of the outdoors into my home creating a sense of peace. Therefore, Winding Rivers is based on this thinking. I channeled the movement of water and the life that lives in it to create a decorative bottle made out of terracotta clay for others to enjoy.

Title: Colorful Fury

Size: L: 7 x W: 7 x H: 9.5 (inches)

I wanted to make a clay object that I had not made before, after 5 years of Empty Bowls and many ceramics classes later this was hard to come up with. I then realized my diffuser was a ceramic piece and I thought a handmade clay object top of it would be cool. And since the purpose of the diffuser is to steam I was inspired to make this piece look like flames. After a long process, I was able to craft an object by rolling out the clay and shaping it against a water bottle and then I hand built triangular shapes on top to create flames. Finally, I glazed the piece with warm colors to suggest light and movement. In the end, Empty Bowls means so much to me even though I am a rising junior in college. And being a business major at UMass Amherst doesn’t allow for much creative time so I was overjoyed that I still am in contact with my EB family and was able to help out with the fifth anniversary of Empty Bowls.
