Fred Claire served 30 years as an executive with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was the team’s Executive Vice President and general manager from 1987 until 1998. During his tenure, Claire earned a reputation for his integrity and for his fighting spirit that built what ultimately led to the team's last World Series championship in 1988. His drive and determination in the face of opposition and doubt from all sides became a defining trait not just of his time with the Dodgers, but of who he is as an individual. In the spring of 2015, Fred would again tap into his fighting spirit after being diagnosed with skin cancer that later migrated to his jaw. Again, the odds were against his survival, but Fred was determined. This time, he found his championship team at City of Hope National Medical center in Duarte, California. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, frontline research, and staffed by top oncologists, City of Hope was the perfect home base for Claire's treatment. Extra Innings highlights how both the landmark career of Fred Claire and the remarkable rise of City of Hope exhibit mutual endurance and give promise to those facing cancer diagnoses.

From the Back Cover

Fred Claire was a longtime marketing executive with the team, widely admired for his character, work ethic, and ingenuity. But he was a former sportswriter with no experience in player trades and roster construction. Yet, just a year later, the Dodger team Claire built shocked the baseball world by winning the 1988 World Series.

But his greatest challenge would come long after he left the game. In 2016, skin cancer that began on Claire's lip had spread to his jaw. With his life on the line, the former baseball executive found his way to City of Hope National Medical Center in the Los Angeles suburb of Duarte.

While Extra Innings recalls Claire's remarkable baseball career, it also recounts the miraculous story of his cancer fight at City of Hope. Readers will be inspired by Claire's unflinching decency and fortitude"€"and by the cutting-edge science and compassion that make City of Hope unique in the annals of American medicine.

About the Author

n a journalism career spanning more than three decades, Tim has written for the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Politico, Reader's Digest, and for thirty years the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Tim's books include the critically acclaimed The Burning: Massacre, Destruction, and the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921; and a novel of the Greatest Generation and the aftermath of World War II, Every Common Sight. His most recent book, Of the First Class: A History of the Kimbell Art Museum, is a behind the scenes account of how the world-renowned Fort Worth cultural institution came to be. It was a 1995 assignment for the Star-Telegram that led to Tim's interview with Fred Rogers, the icon of children's television, and a close friendship between the two men that lasted until Rogers' death in 2003. Tim's memoir, I'm Proud of You: My Friendship With Fred Rogers, is an intimate account of Rogers' human greatness, and a testament to the healing power of friendship. That transformative relationship and Tim's own experiences as a seeking and healing human being remain at the heart of his work. More than a decade after it was first published, I'm Proud of You continues to inspire readers around the globe, and Tim continues to speak of Mister Rogers and matters of the heart to varied audiences around the nation.

Extra Innings is a must-read that chronicles Fred Claire’s incredible career in baseball. Readers will be most inspired by his greatest accomplishment, confronting a deadly foe—cancer—with the aid of City of Hope National Medical Center. As a cancer survivor myself and a former major league player and manager, this story hits home in so many ways.”

- Dave Roberts, Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers

Tim Madigan wrote his first book in 1968 when he was 11 years old. Every week in the autumn of that year, he scribbled down his account of the latest University of Minnesota football game in a notebook. Sales were modest.

But a love of books, words and writing never left released him, leading from his small-town Minnesota upbringing to a Texas career writing newspaper stories and eventually books that were more formally published and found slightly larger audiences.

By the mid-1990s, Tim had become one of the most decorated newspaper reporters in Texas history (three times named the state's top reporter), while writing about everything from sick children, to serial killers, cowboy poets, to his own experiences as a husband and father.

His first book, "See No Evil: Blind Devotion and Bloodshed in David Koresh's Holy War," was published in 1993, followed eight years later by "The Burning: Massacre, Destruction and the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921." In its review, the New York Times called The Burning "A powerful book, a harrowing case study made all the more so by Madigan's skillful, clear-eyed telling of it."

Madigan's most recent book, "I'm Proud of You: My Friendship With Fred Rogers," reveals his life-altering friendship with Fred Rogers, which began in 1995 when he profiled the children's icon for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Tim's first novel, "Every Common Sight," will be published soon.

When not writing books or newspaper stories, Tim enjoys spending time with his wife, Catherine, being a dad, playing the guitar, coaching and playing ice hockey, and backpacking in the Canadian Rockies.

I honestly wasn't entirely sure what to expect when I started this book. I love the Dodgers, and grew up with legends about Kirk Gibson, Tommy Lasorda, and The Bulldog, and that was enough to reel me in and get me interested. And while those stories from the magical 1988 team are truly amazing, they pale in comparison to Mr. Claire's own battle to overcome cancer with City of Hope. Mr. Claire's personal journey not only opened my eyes to the good work COH is doing, but also shined a light on things I could be doing in my own life to be of greater service to others.

Mr. Claire's battle with cancer is one of compassion and courage, and personally, reading this book could not have come at a better time for me. This last year has been really tough for me, and I've struggled a lot with my own anxiety, depression, and self-doubt. Reading about Mr. Claire and all of the wonderful people at City of Hope helped to make me feel inspired again, and hopeful that there are still good people out there working hard to make the world a better place.

Mr. Claire's insight has changed how I think of myself and how I perceive others, and was truly a breath of fresh air. The selflessness, compassion, and love in this book warmed my heart, and the determination and heart that Mr. Claire showed in his battle have inspired me to grit my teeth and take my own challenges head on. It's a story of strong character, hard work, and teamwork, which wonderfully parallels the journey of the magical 1988 Dodgers.

This book will make you cry. It will also make you laugh, and leave you feeling inspired and renewed after just over 200 pages. It's not just a great book that you leave on the shelf after you're finished either; you'll want to send it to all of your loved ones too once you've completed it, because everyone deserves to read this. It's a beautiful journey, and you will be different after it's over. I cannot recommend it enough.

I spent the weekend reading a book about the incredible journey of Fred Claire, best known to Dodger fans as the improbable architect of the 1988 World Championship. Certainly the book offered no shortage of insights and behind-the-scenes stories of the season and Claire’s role in assembling the team. However, “Extra Innings” was less a book about baseball than it was about life.

On one hand, it was about a very particular life, Claire’s life, that hung in the balance after a significant cancer diagnosis. On the other hand, it was about life itself: how precious it is, and how to live it.

Love, kindness, compassion, empathy, integrity, courage, selflessness and hope. On our best days we hope to live up to these ideals. Rare indeed are the people who exemplify them every day. Certainly, Fred Claire is one. Even with his own survival in the balance, you will read about his steadfast determination to honor and support the organization, City of Hope, entrusted with his life and health.

Written by Tim Madigan, “Extra Innings” is a book that may just make you cry. In my case, there were two kind of tears. The first was in watching Fred come so close to losing his battle. The second was from the overwhelming beauty and grace of Fred’s approach to life, in good times and in trying ones.

As a lifelong Dodger fan, the team has provided me with many heroes over the years. All the while I knew I could never play the game at anywhere near their level. My .000 batting average in two years of Little League (and yes, I know my many walks are valued much higher now in retrospect) was an early sign that any career success would more likely come at a desk than on a diamond.

And here is Fred Claire who offers me a chance still to be like a Dodger hero, himself. What’s more the formula is a simple one: to prize every day and be the best person I can. I may never hold a World Series trophy but I can hold something even greater: the satisfaction of a life well lived, its preciousness not wasted, and its abundance shared.

The book is available right here on Amazon, and I recommend it highly. All net proceeds support the City of Hope and the countless families for whom they add dignity if not days.
