MarriageAbility: Embracing the Richness of a Marriage Affected by Disability Kindle Edition
Dreams of marriage rarely include wheelchairs, walkers, or medical equipment. Yet the oneness found in a marriage with disability presents a beautiful picture of the relationship between Jesus and His Church.
This book engages the reality disability puts on the marriage relationship through the real-life, and often humorous, stories of couples living with disability. Readers will find they’re not alone in their journey. They’ll discover a framework to manage the challenges of disability and marriage.
The book will inspire those who do not live with disability to embrace those around them who do.
“I’m so grateful that Joan Borton has poured into this book her extraordinary insights on disability and marriage. My husband, Ken, and I have every confidence that Joan not only speaks from experience, but with true compassion as well as a solid grounding in the Word of God. Plus, she and her husband Jerry have a pretty amazing life together! This is a must-read!”

- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2023Joan Borton has accomplished an admirable feat in her book Marriageability. She not only addresses issue affecting persons with disabilities, but also offers suggestions for those who may hesitate to approach the disabled.
Joan takes us inside the world of physical limitations. She offers helpful suggestions for those who may be hesitant to ask how to help. I especially enjoyed the Embracing Your Friends section at the end of each chapter, telling nondisabled readers how to support their friends with physical limitations.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2024This book was a great resource for my husband and I, as were still learning how to handle life, after our son was diagnosed with a rare disorder. This book made us feel as though someone understood, and reminded us that we are not alone. The author shares real stories about her own marriage and makes it easy to relate by how open and honest she is. The questions at the end of each chapters, allowed us to dig deep into not only our relationship, but our relationship with God as well. It would be a great book to use for a small group study.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2024This is a fantastic book. The author does a wonderful job balancing biblical truth, practical application and deep, personal vulnerability about the marriage journey she and her husband have been on in the context of disability.
Even though the author and her husband have been married for nearly 30 years, she displays a great deal of humility, acknowledging that she's still learning, and that the principles she shares could really apply to anyone. While this book is filled with grace and humility, it also contains an equal amount of truth and boldness that will help you move beyond where you are now.
In other words, this book is a lot like Jesus, who was 'full of grace and truth' (John 1:14). If you are facing the challenge of disability in your marriage - or know of someone else who does - then I highly recommend this book as a tremendous resource.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2024Great read for those with different abilities and those that want to enrich their relationships by understanding what those with different abilities live through. Written from first hand experience Joan shares her insights, humor, and wisdom. Easy to read with applicable knowledge for everyday living. I would encourage all spouses, parents, siblings, extended family members, caregivers, and pastors to read this book. It definitely has something for everyone!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2024Three things first:
I know the author.
I am an avid reader.
I always lower my expectations when I purchase a book written by a friend.
There was no need to lower my expectations. This book was beautifully and cleverly written so that Joan's wisdom, heart, and humor jumped out on every page. Her wit and comfortable style made the book both enjoyable and incredibly helpful.
As several of the reviews mention, this book is much broader than just for couples dealing with a disability in their marriage. My wife and I have an adult daughter who is disabled, and virtually everything applied to us and how disability impacts our marriage, family, and close relationships.
I would encourage all spouses, parents, siblings, extended family members, and caregivers to read this book. It definitely has something for everyone.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2023I received this book directly from the author. I have been waiting for this book to come out, knowing it would be an excellent resource, and I was not disappointed! Using humor, the Bible, and her own experiences, Joan gives nothing but sound, Biblically based, and practical wisdom on every page. She begins by laying a foundation of what God’s plan for marriage looks like. Moving on from there, she covers many aspects of life and how to navigate them when one spouse has a disability. Whether you are in an interabled relationship, are dealing with chronic illness, or whether you want to be more supportive of your friends who are, this book is for you. I’m sure that you will smile, be encouraged, and find ways to be more encouraging to others. Thank you, Joan, for putting this book into people’s hands!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2023I purchased this book directly from the author. The book is perfect for any married couple. The principles apply well for any 2 people that in a relationship. If you are thinking about getting married you can see what are some of the real problems that come up in real true relationships. It takes hard work to be in a healthy, happy relationship. Joan and Jerry talk about pitfalls in an honest open manner. Life is hard, relationships are hard. But this book will give you moments of joy, stress release and laughter. And there are recipes at the end of the book What is there not to like?
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2023I purchased this book directly from the author, and already knew of her humor and practical wisdom in life with her husband who has a physical disability. What I didn’t know was how beautifully she would address human issues I too face as an able-bodied, unmarried person! Her book enlightened me about the world of marriage affected by disability, along with giving me new ways to think about vows and dreams, intimacy, and so many other aspects of my own life. I also especially appreciated her suggestions in every chapter for those of us who don’t know how to help, talk with, or be comfortable in friendships with people with disabilities. What a valuable book for us all.
