Rem is the Shinigami who gives Misa Amane one of the Death Notes she had. Like Ryuk, Rem possesses two Death Notes; however, Rem did not get hers through trickery. The Shinigami Gelus, who had fallen in love with Misa, sacrificed himself to kill her destined murderer. In doing so he was reduced to dust, leaving only his Death Note. Rem delivered this Death Note to Misa, since it was her life he saved. From that point on, Rem looks after Misa and attempts to keep her from harm. Rem shares with Misa the secret to killing a Shinigami: have them kill in order to save someone they favor. After meeting Light, Rem becomes aware of his intention to use Misa as a tool, and when Light tells Misa he would kill her if she does not follow his orders, Rem declares to Light that she would kill him if he harms Misa. While Ryuk takes amusement in everything in the Human World, Rem is almost the exact opposite, viewing most humans with contempt. Also, while Ryuk is ambivalent to Light's success or failure, Rem actively assists Misa. This makes her equally as guilty as Ryuk of not displaying 'proper' traits for a Shinigami to have. She is even willing to sacrifice her life to defend Misa, as evidenced by her threat to kill Light should Misa die before her time. For Misa's sake, however, she still assists Light in his schemes.

Rem is very perceptive. She figures out Light's ulterior motives early on, seeing he plans to use Misa and herself to protect his identity from Detective L and the Japanese task force. Detective L is the investigator in charge of the Kira case and is highly suspicious of Light. Knowing that Misa's lifespan will be halved, Rem tries to discourage her but ultimately has to comply with Misa's wishes and gives her this cursed power. Later when Misa is confined and asks Rem to kill her, the latter refuses to do so and gives the former the alternate solution of losing her memories. Ryuk simply fears boredom and sets the series' events in motion for his amusement. Rem is more observant and loyal to the owner of her Death Note. The difference can be noted in their appearances too. While Ryuk has a darker, sharper feel to him, Rem has a paler, softer design with a light blue hue. The same volume also mentions that Rem has difficulty writing Japanese.

Physical strength: Superhuman Attack potency/Destructive capacity: Street level+ (Death Note ignores durability but has only been shown to work on humans). Durability:At least wall+ scaling from Ryuk and Sidoh, likely not damageable through conventional means (Shinigami have been shown to be invulnerable to conventional damage as shown when bullets phased through Ryuk and when he and Sidoh were unharmed from a large explosion which caught them off-guard). Immortality and intangibility also make her difficult to harm.Speed: At least faster than the eye, possibly higher (Should scale to Ryuk) Intelligence: Very high. Stamina: Nigh-limitless. Range: Melee range, universe+ with the Death Note. Weaknesses: Must obey the laws set by the Shinigami King, breaking many of the laws such as willingly killing a human in order to extend the life expectancy of another human or killing a human through any means other than a Death Note can lead to death a Shinigami's death. Needs to kill humans with her Death Note to extend her own lifespan.

rem grows a strong attachment and protectiveness over misa and tries everything she can to prevent her from dying. whether this is a result of gelus' mishaps is unknown, yet rem holds a deep appreciation for misa regardless.

unlike rem, ryuk seeks trouble and amusement from humans, purposefully dropping his death note into the human realm to see what would happen. she is a striking contrast compared to the opposing death god and bides her time wanting to protect the host of her death note.

rem sees right through him and his every intentions. humans can be such foul things; light is no different than the pure scum he choses to erradicate. rem has made it very clear to him what exactly will happen if he were to harm misa in any way.
