LUDHIANA CMC US REVIEW

Ludhiana Christian Medical College Board, USA, Inc., PO Box 1327, Columbia, MO 65205 Email: MarbleLCMC@gmail.com APRIL 2013

VOLUME 2, EDITION 1 Beloved Professor Remembered

Dr. Beryl Howie was a very talented and capable person who had a great influence on a tremendous number of people, professionally and personally. It flowed from her experience of coming to know Jesus as a student, and from her commitment to serve him throughout her life. She formed a wide cir- cle of loyal friendships, which included her students, and continued to follow them up in her prayers and

with great interest over many years. She had great vitality and love for life, nourished by her daily walk with God and her never-failing trust in Him through all circumstances. It was in response to a clear call of God that she came to Ludhiana. At CMC, in light of the needs of village India and of the calling of the Christian Hospitals to serve the poor, she was committed to training students how to provide quality care even though re- sources might be meager, using clinical acumen and sound grasp of contemporary knowledge. She tried to act with integ- rity, and her chief concern was to follow the truth where it led, rather than be caught in party spirit and loyalties - which re- quired courage! Her patients knew that she loved them and would do everything she could for them, and they loved her for it. We are so grateful to God for Beryl, and for the way we have all been enriched through her experience of His love in her life.

Students Remember Dr. Howie (We heard from many students; here is a sampling.)

She was the most loved teacher during my student days. She had an uncanny ability to remember patients and family members names whether it was in the hospital or CHAURA BAZAAR. Her bike rides to the "Dai Hattaa" in the middle of the night were legendary. I still remember going to her apartment one evening where she was playing her record player with a 35 mm LP, a novelty in the days of 78 mm records in India. And the music was the New Zealand marching band at the 1972 Munich Olympics. I am indeed honored to have been one of her students. I will be delight- ed to support her cause at CMC. —Dr. Anil Chhabra

I am really sorry to hear the news. Even though it makes me sad that she is no longer with us, I am proud to have known her! She was an awesome teacher and a super human being who taught a lot of us what dedication was. She set an exam- ple which was hard to follow !!! —Dr. Savira Sidhu

I am sorry to hear of passing away of Dr. Howie. I knew her as she was my teacher in Obstetrics. She was a great teacher and hard worker. She treated us fairly. She would come fly- ing on her bicycle for an emergency when called in the mid- dle of the night. I sure have fond memories and some jovial ones as she said certain words in Hindi or Punjabi which ended up sounding hilarious. All of us who crossed paths with Dr. Howie will always remember her with great respect and affection. May GOD rest her soul in peace. We thank you for letting us know about her passing.—Dr. Ranjit Dhaliwal

I was very much saddened to hear the news of the passing away of Prof. Howie. I was her student and was very much impressed by her professional ethics. She was a dedicated doctor with great integrity. She treated all her patients with great concern irrespective of their financial means . She treated a poor woman from a village and a rich private pa- tient with equal concern and ability. May she be at peace. With my sincere prayers for her -- Dr. Ranjeet Grover

Dr Howie was one of my finest teachers at CMC Ludhiana. Of course she lived a good life all the way to 88 years. Not a bad score for healthy living. —Dr. Sewa Legha
