Clemson Graduate Student Government Award for Exceptional Student Service

The Gallagher Research Group is led by Dr. Eliza Gallagher. Her primary faculty appointment is in Engineering and Science Education within the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences at Clemson University.

She also has faculty appointments in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences within the College of Science, and to the Department of Education and Human Development within the College of Education.

The group includes PhD students in Engineering and Science Education, PhD students in Learning Sciences, and undergraduate researchers.

Group Structure

The group meets weekly for two hours for research updates, discussion of relevant archival literature, peer review of drafts in preparation, and professional development in support of each member's professional goals.

Each student member also meets individually with Eliza on a regular basis to discuss their own progress.

Undergraduate researchers and first-year graduate students join an existing research project to gain authentic experience in data collection, data analysis, and dissemination. Graduate students who have completed coursework move into project management roles and begin to mentor more junior members of the group. PhD candidates form research teams of their own within the group.

Active Funded Projects

Exploring the Strategies Used by Two-year Colleges to Support Academic Continuity in STEM Education During the COVID-19 Crisis. With funding from the National Sciences Foundation under grant NSF-ATE#2037809, this project uses the engineering resiliency framework and technology acceptance model to understand what strategies have been and are being employed by two-year technical colleges to maintain academic continuity during the pandemic.

SC:SUPPORTED. With support from the National Science Foundation under grant #1744497 and as part of the national INCLUDES network, the SC:SUPPORTED project is examining factors associated with mathematics preparation and major selection in South Carolina. The goal of the project is to use statewide data to identify interventions that will broaden participation in engineering and engineering-related fields.

Congratulations to Clemson COVID Challenge Team E6! Their project, Developing New Course Structures & Compiling Resources for Various Educational Settings in Response to Unique Instructional Demands during COVID-19, won an Award of Excellence with prize funds to continue their work in Fall 2020.
