Work in progress

We have signed a contract with Bristol University Press to produce an introductory reader "Foundations in Inter- and Transdisciplinary Research".  Edited by Bianca Vienna Baptista, Isabel Fletcher and Catherine Lyall and due for publication in summer 2023, this anthology of key readings builds on the resources curated in the SHAPE-ID Toolkit

Disseminating the SHAPE-ID Toolkit

With SHAPE-ID partners, we are currently developing a lexicon of process-oriented keywords that go beyond discipline-based competences to assist in the selection of appropriate ID/TD evaluators.  We will be discussing this in a forthcoming session for policy-makers and funders as part of the ITD conference in September 2021

Pathways to Inter- and Transdisciplinary Research: Introducing the SHAPE-ID Toolkit

The SHAPE-ID toolkit, launched on 10 June 2021, is designed to help researchers, universities, funders, policymakers, and societal partners learn more about interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research involving the Arts, Humanities and Social Science, and take concrete steps to improve how they do it. The toolkit includes curated resources, case studies, reflective tools, and interviews with experts. It covers topics ranging from understanding interdisciplinarity, developing the skills needed to bridge disciplinary divides, and developing an interdisciplinary career, through to supporting, funding, and evaluating collaborative research. The toolkit is the final output of the Horizon 2020 project SHAPE-ID: Shaping Interdisciplinary Practices in Europe.

Being an Interdisciplinary Academic highlighted in THES article exploring the future of interdisciplinarity

Facilitating serendipity for interdisciplinary research

My recent blog available via i2S is generating a bit of discussion - delighted to see it described as "a breath of fresh air".

Being an Interdisciplinary Academic. How Institutions Shape University Careers

  • Emphasises the importance of interdiscplinarity in academia

  • Reveals misunderstandings held about the nature of interdisciplinary knowledge

  • Identifies how researchers can embed interdisciplinarity in their own career trajectory

"Borne out of meticulous scholarship, this book seeks to address this imbalance by offering lessons that are accessible to all academics, regardless of initial training. It is a must read for anyone interested in interdisciplinary research"

—Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, Chair of the Irish Research Council

"As we mobilise to tackle global research challenges, this timely book reminds us that we are forging new routes through academia. This presents new challenges for the governance of our research institutions and, consequently, for the careers of those who work within them. This thoughtful account links those personal and institutional experiences and suggests practical lessons to support both individuals following an interdisciplinary path and those that shape environments for such careers"

—Professor Matthias Egger, President of Research Council, Swiss National Science Foundation
