Night Train kicks off a new month’s feature – celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month and this year’s theme of Women in Jazz and Ella Fitzgerald’s centennial birthday. We also begin a week-long tribute to saxophonist Arthur Blythe, who passed away last week; highlight new albums from the Bob Mintzer All L.A. Band, Organic Trio, and guitarist Ralph Towner; and mark birthdays of singer Tessa Souter, soul jazz organist Jimmy McGriff, and bassist Scott LaFaro (including a special about him in hour two of the show).

Night Train marks birthdays of pianists Benny Green and Michel Camilo, legendary South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, and baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan. The week-long tribute to saxophonist Arthur Blythe, who passed away last week, continues with music from his debut album and a project he did with drummer Joey Baron, bassist Ron Carter and guitarist Bill Frisell. There’s new music from Claire Daly (a tribute to Motown) and Organissimo (a tribute to the Beatles) – and the April Ella Fitzgerald centennial birthday feature continues with collaborations she did with Louis Armstrong, Oscar Peterson, Ellis Larkins, and the Ink Spots.

Night Train marks the birthday of soul jazz saxophonist Stanley Turrentine with music from several of his albums as leader and a Jazz Profiles special about his life and music in hour two of the show. The April Jazz Appreciation Month/Women in Jazz feature continues with new music from Brandi Disterheft and Virginia Schenck (in tribute to Abbey Lincoln), and there’s more in our week-long remembrance of saxophonist Arthur Blythe, with music from his classic later album, Focus, and work he did with legendary pianist McCoy Tyner.
