Review

"Lush...opulent and nutrient-rich." —Betsy James, author, Roadsouls

"Intimate yet carries universal themes... Lyrical... Ethereal and dreamlike.... Tower Road is a unique piece of work... Emotionally cathartic...Can't recommend it enough."

"How does a person feel when trapped within the walls of their own making? What happens when someone gives everything about themselves to the one they love? These are some questions touched upon in
Tower Road: Devotionals, a collection of poetic writing pieces and poems by Kaya Black. These pieces convey existential ideas and thoughts shared from the point of view of narrators in different stages of their lives, coming from varied backgrounds. Black's poetic tales are surreal and full of metaphors, taking readers on their own journeys to derive meaning from the pages. These stories cover a wide range of themes and topics, such as the search for self, unrequited love, losing oneself, the cyclical nature of everything, and much more. Black's work feels personal and intimate yet carries universal human values and themes that will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers.

"Apart from Kaya Black's own pieces, the book contains inspirational quotes and poems from famous authors and popular poets that fill up the pages. These pieces are abstract and penned in a lyrical style that will give poetry lovers much to decipher. The abstract nature of these poetic stories brings a quality to the narrative that feels almost ethereal and dreamlike.
Tower Road: Devotionals is a unique piece of work that gives you a lot to ponder about. Black's poetic verses are emotionally cathartic and bound to light a spark in the reader's imagination. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the reading experience and can't recommend it enough to poetry lovers." —Pikasho Deka, Readers' Favorite

"A search for realism in the fantasy of magic and an effort to understand the hidden magic in the labyrinth of reality." —Mihai Brinas, Reading Life

"Literary treasure... I felt as if I had opened a small music box of words in which a literary ballerina was twirling her way into my heart and mind.... Evocative... Intriguing and thought-provoking." —Gail Galvan, Windy City Reviews

Kaya Black’s book of poetic language is a collection of “devotionals,” or brief ceremonies of worship. The words are grounded in eastern mysticism and western expressions, original and poignant, of love. In a dozen brief prose sections and an equal number of short poems, Black explores spiritual and physical love, its beauty and sadness, in lovely words totally devoid of cliche or obviousness. While it reminds me of Rilke’s way with the rhapsodic, it also had, for me, a more recent referent. Black names Milan Kundera as a touchpoint. I have recently reread The Unbearable Lightness of Being and couldn’t help but notice that Black and Kundera, though in totally different words, are reaching toward a conception of love that comes close to but cannot drown in the ineffable, like the tremendous Wall of Water, which was for me the central conceit of the book. Tower Road reads like the deepest thoughts of Kundera’s Tereza, though in the profound and sensuous words of a woman writer. A book to be read and re-read for its powerful imagery and deep wells of feeling.

Tower Road is a truly original work. These brief prose pieces resemble a series of recollected fugue states — those moments when you are drifting off to sleep, and your thoughts are swirling, and sometimes you experience a haunting vision that immediately disappears — except here, Kaya Black has managed to rescue some of these visions and recreate them in artful form. Some of these recollections resemble prose poems, but all are, in their essence, and in the purest sense of the term, poetry.

I wish there was a ten star option for this book... I'm blown away by Kaya's way with words and ability to move the mind and soul with her poetry. Like a moth to flames, I was drawn into the deeply compelling and burning beauty that Tower Road embodies. This book engages all the senses and you can feel the pain and power flowing from these pages. Creative and compelling, I would recommend Tower Road to anyone seeking a book that is not a passive experience but an active search within the soul. This is truly an art piece in its most raw and wild form.

It’s difficult to express all of the emotions I felt reading Kaya Black’s words in Tower Road: Devotionals. Throughout the entire book you can vividly see through the eyes of narrator, creating an immersive reading experience. Black guides the reader through a range of existential thoughts and beautifully brilliant metaphors while touching on universal human experiences that will resonate long after you’ve put the book back on your shelf. I can’t recommend this book and author enough.

Reading Tower Road is like visiting earth with new eyes. In some moments, words ignite feelings, such as "Your voice is low fire; I evaporate." And, "I am confused by seclusion. Am I already a ghost?"
There is yearning and anguish but this is secondary to a unique beauty that affirms true love and our capacity to give and receive it.

Kaya Black’s Tower Road does not fit neatly into any genre or category, which is one of its many great strengths. Elements of poetry, prose poetry, myth, symbol and an extraordinary attention to the power of words characterize this volume, which is subtitled “Devotionals.” With word juxtapositions that run the full range from breathtaking, to jarring, to meditative, to wrenching, each individual piece grows into a whole, fleshing out the mosaic tale of a woman’s struggle to feel visible, and loved by one man. I highly recommend this completely unique work.

I read this book word by word, so I didn’t miss a single powerful, magical word. Kaya
Black has found the perfect words to convey that beauty can be found in painful experiences and emotions. The writing is a very personal way of soothing the soul and gives the reader much to relate to and think about.
