Dear Reader,

In February 2013 I gave a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast. Standing a few feet from President Obama, I warned my fellow citizens of the dangers facing our country and called for a return to the principles that made America great.

Many Americans heard and responded, but our nation’s decline has continued. Today the danger is greater than ever before, and I have never shared a more urgent message than I do now.

Our growing debt and deteriorating morals have driven us far from the founders’ intent. We’ve made very little progress in basic education. Obamacare threatens our health, liberty, and financial future. Media elitism and political correctness are out of control.

Worst of all, we seem to have lost our ability to discuss important issues calmly and respectfully regardless of party affiliation or other differences. As a doctor rather than a politician, I care about what works, not whether someone has an (R) or a (D) after his or her name. We have to come together to solve our problems.

Knowing that the future of my grandchildren is in jeopardy because of reckless spending, godless government, and mean-spirited attempts to silence critics left me no choice but to write this book. I have endeavored to propose a road out of our decline, appealing to every American’s decency and common sense.

If each of us sits back and expects someone else to take action, it will soon be too late. But with your help, I firmly believe that America may once again be “one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Sincerely,

Ben Carson

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Raised in poverty in Baltimore, Carson was directed by his mother from an early age to read and improve himself through education. He went on to become a neurosurgeon and an advocate for education, developing the Carson Scholars Fund to encourage similarly situated students to improve their prospects through education. In this call to action, Carson admonishes politicians, particularly because of the growing national debt and Obamacare, and encourages Americans to take more individual responsibility for themselves. Highlighting the causes of disunity and decline in the nation, Carson takes aim at political correctness and its impact on curbing honest speech on critical issues. He goes on to outline solutions to the nation’s woes in health care, education, and tax policy, generally relying on capitalism rather than big government. Carson intersperses his own inspirational life story and biblical passages as he argues for the essential role of faith in addressing the myriad complex issues facing the nation. --Vanessa Bush

Material seeks to unite us, Citizens, toward Truth Justice Faith: To the purpose for which we are created and its effect on our Nation. Carson points to History, Science & Human hearts that affirm the success of E pluribus Unum. Carson reminds readers that our history records many weakness and failures. Reminding us that we all all fallen beings. Many mistakes made can and have been corrected which far out number the evil intentions of those who seek to control people for their own aggrandizement.

Carson encourages us to look beyond moral failures of the past and look at the good "we the people have accomplished in seeking peace and justice for all."
Carson points to the U.S. Constitution as an amazing document with Principles and Protections that helped us correct wrongs, even though long coming, while giving us all a voice and a vote for Liberty.

Carson leaves us with a warning that our Founding Documents will only be effective under Leaders and Teachers who affirm its truth to the next generation; and a majority of citizens live under the common good, which is "do unto others as you would want done to you."

(What we can all do to save America’s future)

A short while ago I wrote a review of a great book entitled “Who Stole the American Dream” by Hedrick Smith. In it I stated that the book contained all the information elected officials needed to restore our nation to its former greatness. I stand by that report. This one by Dr. Carson is different. He doesn’t explore as the other did the varied issues. This one is more about calling us all together to join in the battle to restore our nation. I found it to be inspirational and worthy of reading by anyone interested in getting involved.
The Preface is the speech he delivered during the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast. By dumb luck I happened to hear it at the time it was given. I was struck by the power of his words and the courage to say them. President Obama was sitting at the head table with the Doctor. Parts of the comments were a condemnation of the Affordable Care Act (Obama Care). It was obvious that the President did not enjoy the speech.
Dr. Carson grew up in Detroit. He credits the determination of his mother in keeping him from a life of crime. She only had a third grade education. She made him and his brother read two books a week and report. The good Doctor didn’t realize that she couldn’t read. Nonetheless over time he realized how important reading was and became determined to aspire for a better life. He became an accomplished physician.
This book urges all of us to reclaim our country with its former ideals before it is lost forever, doomed as so many others in history. He shows how. All that is needed is for Americans to care enough to band together in common cause. From my perspective, while I agree with him totally, I have little faith it will happen.
Ben Carson is black. He is also Republican. There is a good possibility he might become the candidate for President. Do you remember the support Herman Cain received a few years ago? He was also black. Republicans are not racist as declared by the Democratic Party. They are opposed to most of our current President’s policies, nothing to do with race. It would be great to have a black man with Ben Carson’s credentials to be the candidate. I would be happy to cast my ballot for a man with the moral stature that he has.
Read the book and see what you think.

  • Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2014
Since making a splash the size of Detroit following his speech at the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast, world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson started making the political rounds. In his first book since that infamous speech, Carson builds upon his success and outlines a structure for political revival.

Literarily, One Nation is a straightforward, carefully considered, calm, and respectful book that never cites a problem without also giving a solution. (Each chapter ends with three or four “Action Steps” that the reader is encouraged to take.) This makes outlining Carson’s argument all the more simple.

Of course, any political work that wants to “save America’s future” must first demonstrate how and why America is broken. Carson knows that there are a myriad of problems facing our nation, from the mounting debt to abortion, political gridlock to gay marriage, oppressive taxation to high unemployment. In addition, he cites political correctness, elitism, ignorance, bigotry, and in-fighting has having incubated a culture of divisiveness, pettiness, and ideological imposition (most of which are chapter titles in One Nation).

However, as he mentions in the first chapter, Carson believes that five things will bring America back from the brink of destruction: individual action, common sense, respectful discourse, education, and tenacity. These five principles collectively form the theme of Carson’s principled, disciplined, and ecumenical political agenda.

More specifically, he believes that rational discourse and the resolve to put common goals first can bring us out of this mess. He wants us to look to history, to our Constitution as it was intended to be interpreted, and to our common moral framework and there find the principles to guide us out of turmoil. He wants government to be limited government and freedoms to be respected. He believes politicians (and everyday citizens) should respect their ideological opponents and be willing to compromise. And, possibly above all, he wants us to show some darn common sense.

In support of these goals, Carson admirably provides “Action Steps” designed to foster respect and harmony. In that respect, the end of each chapter reads something like a self-help book.

Throughout One Nation, a decidedly Conservative (as opposed to Libertarian) theme can be discerned. He emphasizes the role of local communities and virtues such as generosity, respect, perseverance, fairness, and hard work. Though he is certainly a free-market economist, he places these principles in a subservient role—he does not elevate them to be governing principles but rather mostly uses them as a tool with which to benefit society. Moreover, he stresses the role of political discourse and common vision as crucial part of recovering America’s future—thus almost sounding like Communitarians Hannah Arendt or Alasdiar MacIntyre at times.

However, even though Carson sounds like a Communitarian at times, he is certainly not one. Some of his strongest rhetoric is directed against ideology, and he repeatedly urges (presumably neutral) “common sense,” thus allying himself with the “liberal” tradition extending from Hobbes through Locke, Smith, Roosevelt, Rawls, Hayek, and Rothbard. In fact, though it is commonly his most popular attribute, I find Carson’s allegiance to “common sense” his most powerful detractor.

By framing his positions as commonsensical, Carson ignores his ideological influences and papers over differences between the paradigms currently at-play in political debates (Conservatism, Reform Liberalism, and Libertarianism). He forgets that he, too, has certain philosophical presuppositions and unchanging principles. Only in this way can he so simply make his plea for peace and compromise.

For example, take Carson’s perspective on the income tax. He supports a flat tax under which each person pays the same percentage of his or her income to the government (no loopholes allowed). He sees this as a “fair” solutions since “everyone contributes according to their ability, or in other words, proportionately” (Ch. 9, 103). He believes that both the rich and the poor can see this as a fair solution if they just consider the other person’s viewpoint. Moreover, he presumably believes that this “fair” system is bias-free since he states, “as soon as you depart from a proportional taxation system, you introduce ideological bias” (Ch. 10, 120).

Ignoring the fact that his almost Rawlsian consideration of another’s point of view is impossible, Carson is clearly ignoring his own biases. While the principle of proportionality might make sense to Carson, other viewpoints (Marxism, for instance) would genuinely see it as oppressive. Carson takes a Christian approach to taxes that emphasizes both compassion and hard work, neither of which is a philosophically neutral position. Carson also weds himself to the classical liberal theory of property that believes that each person is entitled to the fruits of his or her labor (Ch. 14, 174), thus morally foreclosing the possibility of property redistribution. While this may not be an incorrect statement, it is certainly not an obvious one that is free from ideology.

Or, for example, consider Carson’s discussion of religion and religious liberty. To him, the First Amendment prevents the promotion of specific religions without forbidding the promotion of religion (or morality) generally. While we cannot “force our beliefs on anyone else” (Ch. 16, 201) to form a “theocracy-like state” (Ch. 4, 41), we can have a public recognition of morality and of the divine. Moral principles are necessary (Ch. 4, 41), and we can agree on moral principles without “agree[ing] on the source of morality” (Ch. 16, 199) since we all recognize that right and wrong exist.

However, Carson’s interpretation of the First Amendment is not plainly obvious. There are no less than three ways to interpret the Establishment Clause, each of which have been used by the Supreme Court. Carson adopts one of them, dismissing the others as incorrect without giving them any serious consideration. In fact, his interpretation is left quite unsupported since he relies on it as being commonsensical.

Moreover, his belief that common moral principles can exist without a discussion of a moral foundation is a recipe for disaster. Though Carson might be able to draft a set of moral principles, these will be influenced by his Christian faith—understandably so. Many will disagree with them, and few will actually follow them since there is no reason to do so. Carson ignores, or rather cannot see, this fact since he believes his viewpoint to be congruent with the beliefs of the founders (it is) as well as commonsensical.

I do not criticize Carson for holding firm beliefs that are rooted in his faith. I do the same, as do you. (I promise you, you do.) However, I do criticize him for believing his positions are somehow “common sense,” as if they can be readily grasped by anyone with a brain. While his positions make sense from his position, they will seem ludicrous, or even oppressive, from another. While this does not detract from the soundness or truthfulness of Carson’s beliefs, it does require him to engage in a different mode of argument.

Carson seems fond of giving the bottom line—the final recommendation—without giving the “Why?” behind it. This allows him to ignore his presuppositions and allow compromise where there really cannot be any. If he really wants to achieve compromise with all Americans, he needs to recognize this fact and engage in serious, philosophical debate. He must win his ideological opponents over to his point of view. Then, and only then, can we enact “common sense” solutions to our mutual problems.

Exceptional book. I have just finished Part 1 (halfway point) before delving into "Solutions", Part 2.

Dr. Carson outlines how we as a people can take small steps to become interconnected and better people with Action Steps at the end of each chapter. 3 or 4 small steps that you can take (just one per week, try it) to get connected and start to resolve the plague we have for media on TV today.

One of the key points he makes regard certain types of people who are quick to accost you for mentioning religion, sexual orientation or abortion without listening to the reasoning behind your words, rather than listen to your side of the story and share their information that puts them on "the other side of the coin".

This man has been my inspiration for over 2 years now, and is the driving force to my ambitions.
