LUDHIANA CMC US REVIEW FALL 2013 WEBSITE: HTTP://FOLUS.ORG VOLUME 2, EDITION 2 Pennsylvania Taste of India Provides Open Heart Surgery for Five Children

A Taste of India

The Stewardship Foundation and the Ludhiana Christian Medical College Board USA sponsored a fundraising event called “A Taste of India” which raised $25,000 to pay for open heart surgery for 5 children born with heart defects. The event, held at the Passage to India Restau- rant in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, included a gourmet Indian dinner, classical Indian dances, and a presenta- tion on the Ludhiana Christian Medical College by Max Marble, Executive Director of the Ludhiana Christian Medical College Board USA.

The impetus for the event was the visit to Ludhiana of Phyllis Bowers, the Stewardship Foundation Executive Director, and Roberta Jones, former Executive Director of the Ludhiana Christian Medical Foundation US Board. On that trip they met some of the children in need of open heart surgery. Pictured below is Phyllis Bowers with one of those children.

One of the special guests attending the Taste of India was Dr. Forrest Eggleston, who served as Director of the

Medical College from 1982 to 1986. He was also the first Head of the Surgery Department. He is pictured below visiting with Dr. Sewa Legha, CMC graduate and retired oncologist from MD Anderson Center in Houston.

The pediatric heart surgeries, which cost over $90,000 in the US, are performed for $5,000 and a fee of $900 charged to the patient families. The program called the “Gift of Life” was started by Dr. Abraham Thomas, Medical College Director, and Dr. Harinder Bedi, Head of the Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery Depart- ment.

Individuals, congregations or organizations can make donations for these surgeries through the Ludhiana CMC US Board. For more information contact Max Marble at 573-777-2924 or by email at (marblelcmc@gmail.com).
