The result of that work, THE WIND, will be hailed as a masterpiece. An extraordinary number of Zevon's friends contributed their world to THE WIND - they include Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmidt, Tom Petty, Jackson Browne, Emmylou Harris, Dwight Yoakam, Billy Bob Thornton, Ry Coolder, T-Bone Burnett, Tommy Shaw, David Lindley and John Waite.

Review

The Wind probes a wealth of moods and emotions that find Zevon more an excitable boy than the poor-poor-pitiful-me type. -- USA Today, August 28, 2003

Zevon at his best - an irreverent artistic achievement that stands as a triumph of his will to live. --
New York Post, August 26, 2003

Zevon's a lucky man in the sense that brilliant songwriters are granted a form of immortality denied everyone else. --
Rolling Stone, September 18, 2003

First of all, a personal note: I received this album from Amazon.com on Saturday, September 6th. The very next day he died in his sleep (to fellow fans: I'm avoiding the pun, here). I'm glad that it happened that way, because I was able to listen to hear the record for the first time as a piece of music by a dying artist, and not as an elegy. I just feel that's important.

As a piece of work, it's closest in nature to "Life 'll Kill Ya." The arrangements tend towards the sparse, without a lot of embellishment. It's mostly Warren's slightly weak but still potent vocals over some pretty basic tracks.

A lot's been mentioned of the guests on this record, but don't worry--it's still Warren's, all the way. In all cases, they enhance and expand, not control the song. Except in one case, the nasty, rude, cynical (and therefore beautiful), "Disorder in the House," a crunchy, dirty rocker with great lyrics ("I'm sprawled across the davenport of despair") lifted to new heights by the growling, howling guitar work of none other than Bruce Springsteen. Simply fantastic.

Other highlights include the tender "Keep Me In Your Heart," the dirty blues of "Rub Me Raw,", and the funniest song since "For My Next Trick I'll Need A Volunteer," "Numb As A Statue."

But truthfully, my first indication that the album was a winner came in the first line of the first song: "Sometimes I feel like my shadow's casting me." A universal truth opening an incredibly personal record.

I'm glad that Zevon got to make the most of his remaining days, and that he was able to release this for us. RIE, Warren Zevon. I'm going to dry my eyes now.

    PS> A REPLY TO ZEVON'S ATTACKER
Hi, I just want to say that I quite like "The Wind." And that petty crud has no room on Amazon.com. However, I felt I had to respond to this person's repeated personal attacks on Zevon. I never met Warren Zevon, and feel that these reviews should focus on the music. However, this fellow who spends so much of his time attacking deserves at least a brief reply. (I'll bet he thinks he's doing a sociology experiment.)

You see, Mr. Zevon hater...I don't envy you. You must have quite a grudge on to set up that many identities and either type a few lines of another review (while giving one star) or ripping into the artist in a way that you surely view as "satirical."

I have to wonder if you're ok. My advice to you is "live and let live." There will always be fans of things you don't like, and detractors of things you like. Learn to live with it.

Of course, I can't resist one small thing: your line about "Zevon was a lifelong smoker, asbestos was his cover up"? He never said that his lung cancer had anything to do with asbestos. End of story.

Oh, and one more thing: you're angry with Amazon for "attacking" you. I've personally sent you in as inappropriate a number of times. However, if you focused on the music and make a case for why you don't like it, it would be no problem. But you choose to make it a personal attack on people you don't like for some reason (I've also spotted your review of "Born In The USA").

    Grow up.

"The Wind" is a good work. However, when putting it into its proper context, this is a final body of songs made by a man about to meet his maker, then the cd takes on a whole different look and is elevated into a great work.

Zevon was not only dying, he was right about to die. This caused this normally very expressive singer songwriter to become (if possible) even more sincere.

Zevon was such an accomplished songwriter, yet devoid of cliches, that he writes this cd where it is clear that he senses his imminent doom yet never directly approaches the concept of death. His fate is apporached in the most subtle and artistic manner.

The highlight, and most emotional song, is the closer "Keep me in your heart". Its a simply, accoustic ode to himself. The vocals are loud, in your face yet the topic is the most direct dealing with his demise. It is not only agonizingly beautiful but its also very dramatic. It can induce tears.

"Please stay" is gorgeous. Its Zevon, in the most humble voicing, begging for companionship. Its haunting and has a perfect sax solo.

"El amor de mi vida" is another very pretty love song, not told from a passionate or romantic point of view, but rather told from a conclusionary point of view. Very chilling.

The cd is not all gloom and doom. "Dirty Life" is classic, sardonic Zevon rocking out in a , presumably' editorial about his life. "Disorder in the house" amps it up even more subtely commenting on the state of Zevon's life. There are lots of sweet and greasy guitar riffs throughout the song.

I do not think that Zevon would have wanted to classify this cd as his death album (he already did that) but the theme is inescapable.

This is art made about a serious subject matter. Becasue of Zevon's talent and wit, it was done in a superior manner.

Note, this cd does not jump out at you, the songs need to be listened to repeatedly before they finally start to grow on you

I had this as an album years ago, but when it was in storage there was a flood that damaged a lot of our household and I lost this treasure. A few weeks ago I was reading a guitar magazine and was reminded what a great album this is and decided to grab a new copy. I'm so glad that I did.

When Warren was making this album, he knew that his days on the planet were numbered. He used that time to leave us with one more print on life, his life, his view, his words. While there is a decidedly 'weak' aspect to Warrens vocals, he puts his best foot forward, gathers and impressive list of friends to assist and lets us all know where he is at during the period. It's not as somber or melancholy as you might expect and listening to it reminds me of the talent he took with him in his passing.

Before I received this copy it had been several years since I listened to this, but The Wind currently sits in my "Top 10/Heavy Rotation" bin by my stereo and I will listen to it a lot.

. . . My order actually came early so that was great and the packaging was fine, as is usual from Amazon. For those who are Zevon fans, I expect you already have The Wind. If not, why not? Each song here is, or borders on being a masterpiece. Yes, we knew that he knew when he recorded it that it would be his last, and maybe that fact lends a certain poignancy to the recording. And while you can hear the age, weakness and weariness in his voice throughout, you can also hear him rising to the occasion, struggling mightily to find the energy and heart to sing songs that almost all reflect on his (our) mortality. Certainly, the all-star assembly who helped him throughout must have been inspiring to him as he wrote and recorded these songs. And the last song he recorded (and the last one on the recording) is simply arresting in its aching tenderness. ‘Keep in your heart’ never fails to move me—and I can see it being a suitable anthem to be played at any wake: ‘keep me in your heart’—and that’s something we will certainly do for this exceptional songwriter, performer and human being.
