Aims of the Study:
This study aims to explore the relationship between music preferences, self-image, personality and music induced reward.
Eligibility:
We are looking for people who like listening to groove-based music (e.g. jazz, soul/r&b, rock, rap) and who are not professional/professionally trained musicians. This survey must be taken on a laptop, desktop or tablet device (no mobile phones) using good-quality headphones/earphones/speakers.
Tasks:
In the first session, you will:
- answer questions about your musical background and the types of music you like, and complete a personality test
- listen to short music excerpts and say how much you like them
- listen to various drum breaks (rhythmic patterns played on a drum kit) and rate them for pleasure (how much you like them), groove (how much they make you want to move) and complexity (beat tracking difficulty)
In the second session, you will:
- answer questions about stereotypes of music listeners, and a questionnaire about the rewards you get from listening to music
- listen to short music excerpts and drum breaks and complete a rating task, as in the first session
