About the author

My childhood was lost in books and, I suppose, a great deal of my adult life is still in that magical place. I married young and pursued the life of a nomad, living in Mauritius, Hong Kong and Australia before returning to England where I started my own skin care range, Susan Molyneux. My first novel, Tea at Sam's, was published in 2011 and features all of these countries as well as Spain, where I now spend a good deal of my time. I write what I know and embroider the rest and have drawn on my experience as an ex-pat with its distinctive way of life and eccentric characters. The sequel to Tea at Sam's, Making Scents, features the same characters and reveals some secrets of the beauty industry. I have since written two compilations of short stories, Petals in the Sand, and recently, Stories to Go. This is a series of very short stories for those of us with busy lives who like a punchy story when commuting, in a waiting room or when grabbing a break with a cup of coffee. - Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 November 2016The author's writing style is crystal clear, with clever use of illustrative vocabulary, with an underlying hint of humour in places. The depiction of the era; late sixties, is very true to the time and the reader couldn't help but find himself/herself reliving this period. The fashions and type-cast female and male roles, again typical of the time. In particular, the male personalities and expectations. Completely contrasting to how things are now.
The linking of the three female characters is artistically constructed and makes it easy for the reader to move back and forth. Not always the case with novels of varying stories. I particularly liked the foreign assignment aspects and could effortlessly relate to similar experiences.
I have the privilege of being a member of the same Writing Group as the author and am consistently impressed by her short stories.
I could continue with many more positives, but suffice to say, I strongly recommend as a light-hearted, feel-good novel, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Too many novels today are dour and depressing and I personally, prefer to be entertained.
Now for Sue's next novel - looking forward to reading it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 May 2012Tea at Sam's is a delightful story of love, loss, and of life with all its highs and lows. Sue has a wonderful descriptive writing style that whisks the reader away to intersting places, allowing us to touch and feel and smell the places we visit on her pages. I love the way that these friends come together in a beautiful friendship, giving each other support and encouragement. So often in my own life, a 'chance' meeting has changed my direction for the better. We can't live in isolation on this planet and there is nothing more inspiring and beautiful than a loyal friend. Sue captures this in a wonderful story. This would be a great book to read on the beach - or tucked up on the settee at home on a rainy day. Hope the next one is out soon.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 November 2011The book follows the lives of three young women before they meet and the growing relationship between them after they become friends. I particularly liked the conversation between the three friends and the way the characters were brought together. And what a fabulous ending - just loved the description of Spain which captured something magical.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 December 2014Have enjoyed reading this book. Loved all the characters in it. Hong Kong was of interest to me as my parents were married there while serving in the forces. All in all a good book and well written. Looking forward to reading the next one...
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 October 2017I enjoyed reading Tea at Sam's. It is one of those books that make you want to read more and discover what happens. But I am not usually someone who enjoys light fiction and so would not read it again. I prefer historical novels or non fiction building up my understanding of the past. But if you enjoy happy escapism this will be for you.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 August 2012I enjoyed this book so much. I felt we got to know the characters so well and the exotic setting of hong kong and the mention of India made for day dreaming whilst doing the mundane day to day chores of life as a mother in England. Easy to read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 March 2013This book is one of those which once started is difficult to put down.It follows the lives of two married couples who gradually become aware of previously unknown aspects of their husbands`lifestyles. The reader is taken graphically through their times of anger and despair.Eventually with the help of good supportive friendships they are able to move their lives on.Running alongside the central story are wonderfully detailed descriptions of the different cultures they experience on their travels.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 September 2012A good book to take on holiday. I particularly enjoyed the descripions of the various scenarios which must refect a personal knowledge. The ending did seem very rushed and hard to believe and I would have liked a further chapter to bring the book to a tidy end. Never-the-less a very lively book from a new author & I look forward to the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enhoyable read with well defined characters
This was such a breath of fresh air. We've been reading too many kitchen-sink stories in my Bookclub lately. So TEA AT SAM'S was a welcome change. Yes there is loss, betrayal and pain in the heroines' lives but there is also redemption. Sue Cross does not major on the pain, neither does she belittle it, but through it she shows cleverly how each of the three female protagonists deals with it, grows and comes out stronger. Each character is well developed separately, until serendipity in the shape of an adult art class brings them together and they soon realise that they have much in common. The locales and expatriate life are well and vividly described, taken from the author's own personal travels and living overseas. I shall recommend this to my book club.
