- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2014I'm always a little concerned when I hear the word "mindfulness" these days. It's the latest buzzword for what also might be called consciousness or awareness. It often represents an attempt to co-opt consciousness by the world of rationality, a way to employ certain awareness-expanding techniques to make people feel a little better so they can get through their otherwise unconscious day.
Not so with 5-Minute Mindfulness. It fully explains the various mindfulness techniques from many different religious traditions, both eastern and western, while making it clear that the point is to develop an ever expanding awareness on a path toward a very different kind of lifestyle, one that doesn't draw you into negativity in the first place.
A wide variety of techniques are discussed and explained in detail. If you're not comfortable with one, there are many others. Tarot card and crystals not for you? Try praying the rosary or doing some yoga. Not there yet? How about just focusing on your breathing for a few minutes a day?
Will this book convince anyone to chose consciousness over rationality? That's a very difficult thing to do. But for anyone who has already experienced that shift, this would make a great gift--a stocking stuffer for Christmas, perhaps--and will for a long time to come. This stuff will never go out of date.
Just reading this book was a meditation for me. And every time I reflect back on it, I am reminded to take a few extra deep breaths, to live in the moment, to experience peace that the moment always offers, and the joy that arises from that peace. That alone is worth the price of admission.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2013This book is very helpful in starting a practice of Mindfulness. Almost everything we do could be turned into a Mindfulness action. Good Luck!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2013This book does a very good job with demystifying meditation - which is useful if you are intimidated by meditating, don't really know how to go about it or are not very consistent with giving yourself a few peaceful moments to process everything going on in your life.
The authors provide many useful suggestions for practical meditation techniques that fit into your everyday flow - i.e. that don't require you stop everything to sit in lotus pose, alone in a room with incense burning. They make it enjoyable to experiment with the techniques that work best for each of us.
In addition to making meditation easy to understand and easy to do, they make a strong case for meditation as the common sense health and wellness practice. This book is straightforward, compelling and fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly Accessible
This is a really great little book. I've been looking for a book that sets out what mindfulness is plus a few quick, uncomplicated mindfulness exercises. One of the things i particularly like is that the authors point you to using mindfulness practices that fit your style of learning (think Kolb's learning style - but adapted). I realise that i am actually seeking mindfulness for all 4 of the learning styles as i really want a complete experience. It's very practical and a great guide into the world of mindfulness.
