Why this petition matters

Started by Symon Hill

We're struggling to pay our bills and heat our homes. Let's say no to paying for war!

The UK government maintains the 4th highest military expenditure in the world. Jeremy Hunt has reduced support for energy costs and failed to rule out real-terms pay cuts, but he's committed to maintaining 'defence' spending at current levels.

So-called 'defence' spending doesn't defend us. It makes the world less safe by stirring up military tension and diverting resources from tackling the real and alarming threats that we face, such as poverty, pandemics and climate chaos.

Much of the military budget undermines democracy and human rights. For example, UK troops are sent to train the Saudi forces who are attacking civilians in Yemen, in much the same way that Putin's forces attack civilians in Ukraine.

We call on the Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt to slash military spending and use the money to tackle real threats to human security and wellbeing.
