Introduction

As a member of the Community Services Department, you will perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled recreation duties; implement recreational activities; provide leadership and direction for recreational programs; supervise facilities, special events, sport leagues and excursions; and provide guidance to groups engaged in recreation activities; and performs other related duties as required.

Multiple positions are available, and applicants must be energetic, positive, enthusiastic individuals who enjoy working with youth, teens, adults and seniors.

These are part-time non-benefitted positions.   Successful candidates must be available to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends and shift assignments. 

Position Description and Duties

1.  Develops, schedules and implements recreational activities in accordance with established program goals.
 
2.  Works with various organizations and groups in implementing assigned programs.
 
3.  Performs building attendant tasks including assembling of supplies; and setting-up and taking-down of equipment, tables and chairs, as needed.
 
4.  Assures facilities, equipment and play areas are available and maintained in a clean, safe and satisfactory fashion.  Checks for and reports safety hazards.
 
5.  Coordinates, organizes, officiates, coaches, keeps score and leads children's and adult sport activities, leagues and games.
 
6.  Plans, supervises and coordinates a variety of athletic, recreation and social events/programs (including dances, dramatic productions, meetings, fashion shows, excursions, sporting and educational events.
 
7.  Prepares and posts program and activity information, schedules and other reports.
 
8.  Maintains registration, attendance, safety and activity records.
 
9.  Maintains discipline at assigned facility, enforces rules and regulations governing assigned programs and completes incident reports.
 
10.  Supervises and assists with training of part-time recreation staff and volunteers who are conducting programs.
 
11.  Assists in program marketing and recruitment.
 
12.  Renders routine first aid as necessary.
 
13.  Submits and maintains activity financial reports.
 
14.  Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:
Recreation, cultural and educational activities suitable for children, adults, senior citizens or the physically challenged; fundamentals, rules, techniques and materials of group games, sports, crafts and other recreation and leisure activities; basic principles and techniques of first aid.
 
Ability to:
Develop interest and encourage participation in assigned recreational activity; instruct and lead others in assigned activities; engage in moderate physical activity and provide leadership in group activities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, volunteers and other employees; keep and maintain written records; work in a flexible schedule including nights, weekends and shift assignments as program needs change; travel to various job sites throughout the City; work indoors and outside in a variety of temperatures and weather conditions; lift up to 50 lbs. and set-up supplies and equipment; work independently and assume responsibility for a task; and maintain positive personnel relationships.
 
Experience and Training:
 1.  Twelve (12) months of progressively responsible experience leading a variety of athletic and recreational activities, including at least one (1) year of experience at the Recreation Program Aide level or the equivalent.

2.  Equivalent to the completion of high school supplemented by college-level courses in recreation, physical education, sociology or related programs;  

AND/OR

3.  Work experience that demonstrates the ability to lead recreation, sports, fitness or diverse cultural programs.

License or Certificate:
Possession of or ability to obtain, prior to employment, a Class "C" California Driver's
License and a good driving record. This classification may be required to transport program participants via City vehicle and must possess a California Driver’s license and proof of a good driving required to fulfill this job duty.
 
Applicants will be required to submit, a seven (7) year DMV driving record report which was obtained within the past 30 days before hire date.
 
Current First Aid and CPR for Public Safety Personnel in accordance with Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations by date of hire.
