2021 Southeast Asian American Studies Conference A Virtual Conference hosted by San José State University

Conference Description

July 8 and July 9, 2021

The 2021 triennial meeting of the Southeast Asian American Studies (SEAAS) Conference will provide an opportunity to reimagine a sustainable and empowering future. 2021 marks the beginning of President Biden’s administration, the completion of the 2020 Census count, and 41 years since the 1980 Refugee Act was signed into law. As such, it marks a pivotal moment for Southeast Asian American Studies to grapple with histories of militarism, displacement, and imperialism in our communities during a dual pandemic of COVID-19 and racial and political unrest. It is also a time for transforming the past into new possibilities of the future invested in building culture as well as grassroots, intellectual, and political power. By locating the past as the condition of possibility for Southeast Asian diasporic futurity, this conference seeks to locate the future of social justice in the present moment of arts, activism, scholarly thinking, and community building efforts on the ground.
