CALEB
He is enamored by a damsel-in-distress dressed as a superhero.

When Nova leaps into Caleb Grant’s life wearing a superhero costume and performing parkour stunts, she leaves him undone. The more he discovers about her, the more he wants to pursue her. The only problem is she is on a mission to avoid him at all costs.

NOVA
She has admired him since they were kids, but she doesn’t want him to know that.

One silly bet drives Nova Stone into a chance encounter with her ideal(ized) man. Afraid Caleb will be nothing like the great man she built him up to be, she has been avoiding him out of a sense of fear and unworthiness. But now that she’s on his radar, she can’t escape him, and he may well turn out to be much better than she had first imagined.

Same school. Same church. Same office. He never noticed her until one day, like a gazelle, she leaped into his radar, and he could no longer unsee The One Who Wrote Away.

    LOVE LOVE LOVE!
First, I adore Joanna Alonzo. Her writing style is beautiful without being over-worded. Her stories speak to me so deeply, I don't even know how to explain it. I wonder if we might be amazing friends if we met in real life, because this girl speaks right to my heart.

The One Who Wrote Away is, at its core, a love story. But romance isn't the only love being touched on. Yes, the story itself is about a boy and a girl who fall in love, but it's so much more than that. It's about learning to love the icky parts of ourselves and our past, and to heal from those who have hurt us. It is also about understanding the depth of how God loves us and understanding what it means to be loved by him.

There is so much I want to say about specific things in the story, but I don't want to spoil it for potential readers. My advice is this---read this book, and then read everything else this girl writes. She has so many beautiful things to say to a world of darkness, loneliness, pain, betrayal, and heartbreak, a world that needs love, that craves it with every breath.

Thank you, Joanna, for your boldness in speaking the truth of God's love to a broken world. I already dove into the next one....😍

This book was a really good read for me. I liked that the FMC dealt with issues with a relationship in the past, but was able to move on from it. I also liked how it was about Christian living and forgiveness included with the cute romance story.

Such a sweet story of how God can take past hurts and build character and resilience as well as bring healing when we find the strength to forgive. As love is Nova not only found her forever friend but a double blessing. God is good!

How refreshing! Humorous, intense while highlighting God who heals hurts and is a refuge, all wrapped up in a clean romance. As Caleb and Nova learn to surrender everything to God they discover that He makes everything beautiful in His time.

I enjoyed reading this inspirational romance that had so much of real life in it. Difficult situations, scary ones at times, and pain of broken relationships and abuse too dotted the past for Nova and others in the story. The author doesn't have easy fixes for them but rather a journey of healing through the grace and forgiveness of God. Life isn't always sweet and happily ever after all the time and yet happiness can happen despite the tragedy of pain which the author brings out well in this easy to read romance where she makes you want to keep reading to see how they might get together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christian Romance I've Longed For
Reviewed in Canada on May 6, 2025
One word that comes to mind as I reflect on this book is: Finally.

I have so longed for Christian romance that makes faith explicit, where people pray and go to church and grapple with the Bible and have testimonies! I have longed for gritty stories that explore the brokenness of living in a fallen world. I have longed for BIPOC representation in Christian romance.

I got all of that and more in this book!

The writing was beautiful, the characters realistic and the story compelling.

    I loved it.

    Read this book, ASAP.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story with beautiful depth
Reviewed in Canada on February 1, 2024
The One Who Wrote Away is a deep, gritty, romantic story about the journey of Caleb, the beautiful soul raised in a loving Christian home and Nolan’s sister, Nova, a gracious, strong woman raised in an abusive household. Alonzo has written a book with prodigals and redemption with moments of humour, meaningful encounters and messy situations. Quote: "And for the first time in her life, Nova said a prayer to a God she had never known, but somehow still felt familiar to her — like a magnificent ancient Force Who had known her since the day He had formed her in her mother’s womb."
