About the authors
Michelle Duffy is an IT professional living and working in Seattle. She spent 8 years working at Amazon.com before breaking out on her own as an independent contractor - mainly to allow more time for family and travel. She's currently working with Virtuoso as a software project manager with a dash of social media consulting on the side.
With her natural passion for travel, she and her husband left Dublin, Ireland in 1995. After exploring much of the Western U.S., they settled in Seattle with their two boys. Parenthood did not preclude Michelle's intent to wander far and wide. She has traveled extensively in the U.S., Europe, South and Central America with her family. Her children have so far: visited Machu Picchu, explored Mayan Mexico, enjoyed the view from the Acropolis and marveled at the kangaroos in South Australia - as well as visiting many other fun destinations worldwide. Michelle is currently planning 15-month round-the-world trip with her family.
Michelle blogs as WanderMom (on www.wandermom.com) and is co-author of Wanderlust and Lipstick: Traveling with Kids.
Northwest native Leslie Forsberg is an award-winning independent writer, editor and author who focuses on travel, sustainable living, the environment and and natural foods. She is the author of Michelin Must-Sees Pacific Northwest (2013) and Wanderlust and Lipstick: Traveling with Kids (2009). Her writing also appears in several other Michelin Travel Guides, as well as Alaska Airlines Magazine, Western Journey; Home and Away; Via and other publications. Forsberg's travel writing has won several SPJ (Society of Professional Journalist) awards.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2010I just purchased the Kindle version of this book and I have found many great resources in it. I was specifically looking for more information and experiences of families traveling with a young baby, however, found great information from some of the corresponding websites.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2010I was really disappointed with this book. As a traveller and mum of two I found this book did nothing but state the obvious with interjected personal stories. I was hoping for some really useful tips, but didn't find them here!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2009I bought this book because traveling with our twins had been extremely challenging for us. A lot of it probably had to do with being new parents, but we've always loved to travel and we just weren't enjoying the way we used to. This book has provided us with lots of hard earned knowledge and tips that have paid off on every family outing we'd made since getting it. We use it as a reference guide and it goes with us everywhere now. With our regained confidence we're planning a trip to Europe with our twins at 18 months and looking forward to it.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2009One of my favorite sites is Wandermom's, at Wanderlust and Lipstick. Always sharing great ideas, tips, stories, and more, Michelle Duffy (Wandermom) is just the consummate family traveler. I was so pleased to find out that she and co-author Leslie Forsberg have a new book out, Wanderlust and Lipstick: Traveling with Kids!
It is full of excellent ideas - and REAL LIFE stories from many moms that have traveled with their kids, be it around the world or around their state. When I first opened the book, I was intrigued by the Table of Contents. Yes, I am one who reads that (and then a bibliography, if included) first. From talking about Why Travel with Children to Learning before you go, flight plans, friends and family, getting around, pack it up, health and safety, responsible travel, and more - this book is jam-packed with incredibly useful information for family travel. One of my favorite parts of the book is Meeting the Locals - from ideas about spending time with a local family to language, organized meetings or camps, bringing gifts from home, or volunteer work, this section has all the makings to help your child become a true intercultural traveler! Another excellent resource is the extensive packing list for traveling with kids of all ages. I hadn't thought about many of the items on the lists - and am very grateful for it!
Truly, this is THE BEST book I've seen about traveling with kids. Hopefully it will inspire more families to explore the world, become global citizens, and learn that there are great adventures, friends, and learning anywhere!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2009My mother-in-law purchased this book after hearing a radio interview with the author - although we love to travel, we were a bit put off with the arrival of our second...despite our former wanderlust, we definitely are thinking twice before boarding a plane with two under twos. I've read all sorts of travel guides, books, etc. in the past so definitely was a bit skeptical; I was happy to find that this particular book really covered ALL the possible scenarios of travelling with kids - sort of the perfect book to ease my neuroses of making that step to get on the plane (or just book the tickets) - the topics are exhaustive, sort of like the very best baby books like the 'What to Expect' series.
Also, to all the Dads out there, no lipstick required to enjoy this book - there's good stuff in this one for everyone in the house!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2009A great resource full of tips for traveling with your children no matter if you are making a short trip to visit family, or doing something adventurous in a strange land!
Wanderlust and Lipstick: Traveling with Kids covers all of the bases with practical advice concerning safety, budget traveling, eco-friendly trips, and how to best utilize technology when you are on the road.
Very specific suggestions about what to pack (and what not to pack) are a wonderful reference for parents of little ones! Take the advice from someone who has made a few mistakes about over packing in the past.
I think this book is especially informative for new parents and will help them gain confidence for that milestone: Baby's First Trip!
I also enjoyed the "in the trenches" stories from 50 mothers to inspire you in conquering the sometimes frightening pilgrimage of parenting on the road.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2010This is a thorough, well researched guide to traveling with kids of all ages. Michelle and Leslie's interviewed countless moms about their experiences traveling with their own kids, and that gives the book a broad perspective, especially when it comes to dealing with different personality types and challenges on the road. Short stories from real moms, sprinkled throughout the book, also make what could easily have been a dry and pragmatic handbook more engaging.
Traveling With Kids does a good job of covering the basics (while delving in deep on the important topics like surviving a plane flight). Where appropriate it provides links and references for more information.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2009I picked this up while waiting for my wife and daughter - my wife had left it in the car (she's reading it now). I have to say, I was very impressed with the contents of this book! We travel as much as we can, and getting ready to go (and getting there) is 90% of the hard work. I was glad to read your extensive tips - and really appreciate hearing from parents that have been there.
I highly recommend this book.
