- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2013Of course we all know the story of Cinderella, with its plethora of incarnations and permutations. To attempt making YET ANOTHER VERSION that's fresh and new would seem like a daunting task, but Kristen Caven has done it!
I first read The Souls of Her Feet as a "blook" -- a book published as a series of blog posts (a modern twist on the Charles Dickens-style serial stories-turned-novels). So when I bought the e-book, I already knew Ms. Caven's version of the story (along with the dozens of versions I've read as a mother of girls and a former kindergarten teacher). It's hard to comprehend, then, how this book can STILL be a page-turner when you've heard it a million times and you already know how everything turns out. But I found myself reading and reading and reading ("just one more chapter then I'll stop... ok, just one more... ok now REALLY just one more...")
The author has created well-imagined characters that are funny and real, and a little over-the-top, yet recognizable and human and likable (even the rude ones). And we know the good guys will prevail but we like hearing the story play out anyway. And we like the feel of that budding romance. And we want Ashley to have a loving home. And we love that her fairy godmother is a "hairy god-whatever" that shares her shoe size and fortunately is a cross-dresser so he can provide her with the perfect pair of heels for the ball.
I think this story line never gets old the way that Pride and Prejudice never gets old. It gives hope to the underdogs of the world. And that's my only explanation for why I can read it again and again and again.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2016I can't wait for the musical. Ms. Caven has hit a chord, with me at least. I love the post modern way she has of the characters being conscious of the Cinderella connection. The unashamedly cross-dressing fairy godfather is a delight, fully lovable character, as is Ashley herself. Her learning to stick up for herself and then getting the man she wanted! The use of the fairy tale gives the novel a mythic quality, a sense that we all live the same stories over and over again but each time it's different. Suitable for all ages and genders.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2015I would give this book a five if it didn't have swearing words. It had a lot of detail and made me cry
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2014I liked this book because as a kid i loved cinderella. But I wasn't a fan because it got boring after a while. The author should have spiced it up a little.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2014Get me a ticket to Broadway so I can be the first to see this in the theater! Kristen Caven has magically combined all of the elements of being a teenage girl on the cusp of discovering and living her strengths with the true meaning of internal and external beauty. A contemporary Cinderella renewing the universal message to girls about the ability to overcome life's obstacles and how to make the most of the fabulous power of different. Bravo.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2016A decidedly different approach to the Cinderella story--sit back, relax and put on your best pair of dancing shoes--even if they are a size ten.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2018The Souls of Her Feet is a hip, modern take on the Cinderella fairy tale. Craven’s fluid, well-crafted writing style makes it a delight to read. Despite the narrative’s being based on a familiar plot, there are many surprises and a great deal of humor. The characters are well-developed and realistic, some likeable, others … not so. I found myself smiling and turning pages as the story pulled me in.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2016Not a new story, since this Cinderella has the same plot of so many other Cinderella stories, but the modern and unique angles are very interesting and quite clever. Kristen Caven, the author, has other books and publications about creativity, liberal arts, and relating to children. She is an illustrator, graphic designer, dancer and baby sitter and obviously enjoys relating to children and teens. You will find this a delightful and whimsical read.
