I also find it beneficial to get to work instead of participating in, to my mind, useless prayers, so I can actually help a sibling or 2 with small material help that they now and then ask me for or just take. They prefer to spend their time believing, attending church and bible lessons, and praying to their imaginary friends, while I prefer to make a little extra money or work on my own maintenance needs to save money and help my children or relatives and neighbors once in a while.

Another benefit to me is that I no longer feel too guilty for my shortcomings and appetites; I have come to understand that I am far from perfect and that my appetites are natural and healthy. I no longer worry about an afterlife as I have never found any evidence for it, thus, I focus more on the here and now and on loving those near me here and now. I am not anymore tormented by the possibility of not being good enough for an imaginary being; heck, I may not even be good enough for my wife, but she accepts me and I cannot ask for much more.

I could go on and on, but I expect that you have gotten the gist. I hope my answer has not offended you.

Abortion is a good example. Not believing in an unsubstantiated immortal soul bestowed upon a zygote at conception or an unsubstantiated God who has a plan for a future human being lets you see the situation as it is: a non-sentient cell cluster of human genome occupying a grown-up, sentient human being’s body against her will. Another one is gay marriage. If you don’t fall for the dogma that homosexuality is sin, you are able to see that gay people having consensual sex, having a relationship, marrying each other and adopting children harms nobody. All it does is making gay people and the children they adopt happier. It becomes completely and utterly obvious that banning those things brings nothing but misery.

There are countless examples where religious beliefs can cloud your sight and cause suffering and pain. If you are not burdened with such, you are freer to make good decisions.

Over the past couple of years, I’ve found there to be several benefits to losing my religion.

  1. More free weekends. Time I used to spend going to church can now be spent on doing something productive, like writing, getting homework done, or making music.
  2. Saving money. Money I used to toss in the donation basket can now be used for a variety of different things.
  3. Not being shamed for the choices I make. It’s nice that after making a mistake, I feel guilty, and then I move on with a learned lesson. My anxiety is no longer perpetuated by the thought of extended perdition in Hell in an afterlife.

  4. Continuity with my principles. One of my main reasons for leaving religion was that it provoked great turmoil inside of me when I tried to force myself to have faith. I eventually realized that I can’t be both intellectually honest with myself and believe I have a personal relationship with the benevolent (or malevolent if you’re looking at the Old Testament) Creator of the entire Universe. In other words, I don’t have to try to maintain a state of doublethink.
  5. Enjoying the Christian Bible and belief as a complex mythological story. Basically, reading the Bible with a mentality much like that if reading Homer’s The Odyssey and The Iliad and Greek mythology, Dante’s Divine Comedy, and Egyptian mythology.
  6. Free myself from any flawed religious moral framework. It feels good and right to figure out my own moral compass and philosophical principles for myself rather than just regurgitate laws and beliefs from thousands of years ago.
  7. A sense of unity with the universe. This may seem strange, as the above statement seems like it’d be better fit within a religious dogma. However, I enjoy a great sense of unity with everything around me in that I’m both lucky to have come around to exist and be conscious at all, and I think it’s incredible that the stuff that makes me up was 1) Formed in the core of a star, and 2) Formed next to molecules that would settle on the surface of other planets or would become other forms of life on Earth.

That’s all I have for now, if I come up with more I’ll be sure to add them!

To me, faith or belief in God aren’t options - it’s not a choice I can make. I either do believe or I don’t. So I don’t think there are any benefits, so to speak. Possibly, in some ways, the opposite. I’m sure many people derive a great deal of succour and comfort from their faith which I simply don’t have access to. But I can’t believe something I don’t believe. I’m too clear-eyed for that.

EDITED to add:

Moreover as an atheist I don’t think it’s in any way appropriate, necessary, advisable, desirable or whatever to persuade people that God doesn’t exist, or to talk them out of their faith. I think a lot of believers have the impression that if they “fall among non-believers” they are in danger. Not with me they aren’t. Unless their belief causes them to feel that their God is telling them to drop gay people off tall buildings or shoot Muslims or chop up people’s genitals. Then they’ll get a run for their money because I suspect that no god worth its salt would require its believers to do that.

The Greek philosopher Epicurus identified the fear of God as one of the greatest causes of human miseries.

If you are a believer in God, you can’t enjoy happiness in your life, whatever you do or don’t, because practically,

  • God prohibits everything that you want to do as sin, and you fear suffering in the afterlife, and
  • Everything which is prescribed in your religion as virtue is unnatural and causes you suffering in this world itself.

Let me give some examples,

  • If you are a meat-eater, you are responsible for killing innocent animals and incurring sin, for which you can be sent to hell, or you may be born as an inferior species. Even if you are a vegetarian, you are still not free from sin because you still kill mosquitos, cockoches and pests.
  • If someone harms you or your family member, you must follow nonviolence (offer your other cheek) and even be prohibited to defend yourself, according to Christianity. However, if you don’t, you are guilty according to Judaism ( due to the eye-for-eye policy) or Hinduism (protection of Dharma).
  • You commit a grave sin, if you abort a child for whatever reason, as all lives are given by God.
  • You must fast regularly (like in Navraatri, Ramdan, Karva-Chowth), sometimes without water, to please God. If you don’t, God may get angry and hurt you or your spouse.
  • If you worship idols, you please the Hindu Gods but commit sin according to Judaism and Islam. If you demolish idols, you are guilty in the eyes of Hinduism.

A religious person is also a God-fearing person, and he has to always worry about pleasing God, who is almost impossible to be please because He prohibits even natural desire. Jesus Christ says,

But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. (Matthew 5:27–30)

If you get married and have a horrible time with your spouse, you can’t even divorce according to Hinduism, and you are adulterous according to the Bible, as Jesus emphasised the permanence of marriage (see Mark 10 at verses 1 to 12, Matthew 19; Luke 16:18) but also its integrity. In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus says "Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.” However, if you are a Muslim, all you have to do to get a divorce is to say the word Talaq thrice.

As far as Islam is concerned, the less said, the better, as there are numerous verses which ask the believers to carry out jehad, demolish idols and kill infidels and idolators. You commit sin even when you earn interest on your bank deposits in the bank.

If you believe in God in the true sense (all religions are correct, and there is only one God), you can practically do nothing which can please God and the moment you follow your heart and do something that pleases you, you commit a sin against one God or another.

Hence, if you fear God, you can never be happy in this world.

Accordingly, Epicurus tried to demolish the fear of God from the mind of the people by indirectly suggesting that there is no God as there is too much evil in the world.

He formulated what is called the ‘Epicurean Paradox’, which can be stated in the following words:

  • If God is willing to prevent evil, but is not able to, then He is not omnipotent
  • If He is able, but not willing, then He is malevolent
  • If He is both able and willing, then why is there such a thing as evil
  • If He is neither able nor willing, then why call Him God at all

You are called an atheist if you don’t believe in God.

If you don’t believe in God, you are free from the commandments of God(s) of different religions. Hence, you can make the best decision in the given situation and take responsibility for your actions.

If you are a religious person, you can never live life with a clear conscience because it is impossible not to commit some sin in the eyes of God.

Hence, it is not surprising that there is so much rush to go to temples, churches, and mosques and take holy baths in the sacred river at an auspicious time to wash your sin off.

The greatest advantage of being an atheist is to get freedom from the fear of God, and take responsibility for your actions.

As long as there are religions in the world, people of different faiths will keep hating each other since each theist believes in their God while demolishing the other religion as superstition.

Only when societies are formed based on objective truth and reason without the assumption of God, all humans can become one people and be on the same page, and learn to live harmoniously with each other.

Atheism is one thing: A lack of belief in gods.

Atheism is not an affirmative belief that there is no god nor does it answer any other question about what a person believes. It is simply a rejection of the assertion that there are gods. Atheism is too often defined incorrectly as a belief system.

To be clear: Atheism is not a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of belief in gods.

To be clear: Atheism is not a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of belief in gods.

Advantages of being an Atheist:

1. INTELLIGENCE

Atheists tend to have higher IQs and have been shown to generally be more intelligent than religious people. Intelligent people also tend to spend more time in school, which in turn leads to greater success professionally.

2. BETTER JOBS

This follows from the previous reason - more intelligent people tend to do better in the workplace. The same studies that have shown higher levels of IQs for atheists also equated that with getting higher-level jobs and higher pay.

3. SELF-ESTEEM & SELF-RELIANCE

These are two sides of the same coin. Atheists are not being told that they are guilty and sinful, as is the case with many religious teachings. This leads to higher self-esteem and a feeling of control over life’s events. As atheists do not expect a deity to help them solve a problem, they will address it personally and directly. The increased self-reliance can have a positive effect on their own lives, but also on the lives of others. When there’s no wheel of life, reincarnation, heaven, or hell, the responsibility for made choices lies with individuals.

4. HEALTH

Atheists believe in science and would not stand in the way of medical treatments on religious grounds. While there have been studies that showed the mental and physical health benefits of being a believer, there have also been recent studies that showed no significant difference in the mental health of religious and non-religious people. In fact, it can be argued that having strong self-esteem and better economic status would make atheists more healthy.

5. PEACEFULNESS

Atheists do not start wars or commit acts of terrorism for religious reasons, just to prove their deity is the correct one. On the other hand, Marxist-Leninist atheism at the core of communism has certainly given atheism a bad name, but it's not necessarily an argument that it was atheism itself that led to the repressions and killings. There were complex historical, social, and economic reasons for that. Atheists tend to not kill others for the sake of atheism.

Do these reasons mean you should abandon your faith?

You make the call. But being an atheist needs not to carry any negative stigma in a world still dominated by believers.

  • I never feel conflicted about accepting science.
  • I am not repelled by any cultures because of my religious values.
  • I can think clearly and rationally, without the influence of fictional actors.
  • I don’t live in denial of my mortality and the fleeting quality of my existence.
  • I am not afraid of going to hell.
  • I am free of most irrational guilt. I am able to do what I see is right without worrying about religious morals or god’s judgement.

  • I’ve embraced the fact that I don’t know many things about the universe and my existence, and that I have no control over the way events play out that aren’t under my influence.
  • I’ve embraced the fact that I do have control over myself, and that my strength will not come by the grace of god but by my own will.

Being an atheist doesn’t sound so terrible does it now?

People don’t become atheists for “advantages,” like some Christians seem to think — “you’re only an atheist because you want to sin.” People become atheists because they come to a realization that God is a mythical being based off of rational thinking and facts. However, there are benefits to being an atheist.

  • There’s no conflict anymore between what you believe and reality.
    • I don’t think it’s possible to reconcile science and religion. When the two go head to head, science always wins. It’s not like any scientific theory has ever been replaced with a religious belief.

    • I don’t think it’s possible to reconcile science and religion. When the two go head to head, science always wins. It’s not like any scientific theory has ever been replaced with a religious belief.
    • Think of the conflicts religious people have to go through. Do I believe that a dead man came back to life, or do I believe that that’s impossible? Do I believe a virgin was impregnated without the sperm of man, or do I not? Do I believe certain lines in the Bible that say homosexuals should be put to death, or do I believe my own humanity that says everybody deserves the right to life?
    • There are still a lot of unanswered questions out there, but reality never contradicts atheism. Reality contradicts religion all the time. Saying hello to atheism means saying goodbye to a lot of cognitive dissonance.
  • You have more realistic expectations about life and death
    • It’s an important realization to know there’s no afterlife awaiting. Don’t waste your time in a career that you hate, don’t deny yourself the ability to pursue your passion, and spend time with those who make you happy.
    • You’re also more sympathetic to people worse off than you; the poor, hungry, victims of any sort. You’ll know to help them because things won’t get better after they die. They’ll only get better if someone steps in.
  • You get your Sundays back.
  • You can relax knowing God and your dead family members aren’t watching your every move.
    • Grandma isn’t watching you do that.

Again, atheism isn’t quite advantageous. More people accept theists, and you’re open to a lot of ostracism if you’re an atheist. I feel a lot better knowing God doesn’t know my every thought, because then I would definitely go to hell (which I believe is mythical as well).

  • You stop blaming the Devil/Lucifer/Iblis whenever you do something wrong and start taking responsibility for you own actions. → At some points in my life where I’ve done some “bad” stuff I did blamed myself, but I blamed the devil more for inciting me, and told myself that it happened because maybe I don’t pray enough.
    • You also stop thinking that God is punishing you when something wrong happen and feel sad or bad at yourself. It’s just life.
  • When you get in trouble, you take action instead of prying for someone/something that doesn’t exists.
  • When ever you get help from someone. Instead of thanking God, you thank the person who did it for you. You begin to see the goodness in people.
  • You realize that when you pass an exam or get a promotion or something similar, it’s not God’s doing, and it is certainly not because you prayed. It’s because you did good and worked hard. You then gain more confidence in yourself.
    • And Vice versa, when you fail in your life its not because you don’t pray enough. Its because you need to work harder.

Later in life I made several friends who come from a middle eastern country, both christians and muslims. During conversations with them the issue of religion rose and I admitted my lack of religion. After some initial disbelief my christian friend said to me 'You are free' and for the first time I realised this simple fact. Q: What are the benefits and disadvantages of being an atheist?

A: The advantage is that you are not ridden by guilt if you have one off the wrist, eat a prawn sandwich, or being in love with a person of the same sex or from another religion.

The disadvantage is that you’re constantly mistaken for being an astrophysicist, cosmologist, biologist, anthropologist, paleontologist, biochemist and many other fields of science (and some fields of philosophy), and are constantly asked questions by people who didn’t do their homework and don’t know how to use Google, or a dictionary.

From being an atheist you get to stay in samsara - the endless cycle of birth and death. What atheists get in life is limited to the body and mind. IOW, it’s limited to eating, sleeping, mating and defending.

Thus, an atheist goes through life without any connection to the real self, the soul.

The best way to define the soul is as the observer within the body. In the Vedas the soul is defined as a minute particle of God’s consciousness.

"The soul is atomic in size and can be perceived by perfect intelligence. This atomic soul is floating in the five kinds of air [prana, apana, vyana, samana and udana]. The soul is situated within the heart, and it spreads its influence all over the body of the embodied living entities. When the soul is purified from the contamination of the five kinds of material air, its spiritual influence is exhibited." -- Mundaka Upanishad, 3.1.9

It’s the presence of the soul that animates all living entities.

People usually identify themselves with the body and its culture, and that false identification of oneself is due to ignorance of the real self, or the soul. So our real identity is as souls, and in Bhagavad Gita, God offers a brilliant argument to help us realize our identity as souls, different from the body and mind

Krishna says:

As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change. (Bg. 2.13)

What Krishna is saying here, is that the body changes from childhood, to youth, to old age. But the self, or the ‘I’ within, remains the same. One's mind and intelligence change, certainly. One's thoughts, feelings and convictions change as time progresses. But it is the same inner observer who experiences these changes. The I-feeling remains constant.

So, despite the alterations of matter in the body and mind, we remain the same inner observer. And that is the eternal soul.

It is the same person, or soul who sits in a child's body, as the one sitting in the old man's body. The person don't change, in the sense that he remains the same observer.

His thoughts and feelings and intelligence change, but it is the same self who experiences those changes. In this way anyone can experience their own real self.

The soul, or the self, belongs to God’s marginal energy. Being marginal means the soul will be controlled either by spirit or matter. It will be controlled either by God, or by the body and its culture.

The choice we have is whether we want to be controlled by matter, or by God.

When one's choice is motivated by the desire to become free from the false ego, free from bodily identification, then one begins his spiritual journey back home, back to Godhead.

As long as we think we can become happy in a material body, we are in illusion, and the minute we realize we are not this body, and that the happiness of the body is ephemeral and without substance, we can achieve real happiness - the happiness of the soul.

Krishna says:

A person who is not disturbed by the incessant flow of desires -- that enter like rivers into the ocean, which is ever being filled but is always still -- can alone achieve peace, and not the man who strives to satisfy such desires. —Bg 2.70

Among other things:

  • A much more rational view of life, the Universe, and everything.
  • No more wasting money on contributions to your religion.
  • No more wasting time praying.
  • No more wasting time going to religious activities.
  • Not feeling compelled to hate homosexuals, transsexuals, non-believers, etc., just because a god supposedly commands it.

Are there also drawbacks? - Sure; but mainly:

  • Depending where you live, you could get executed, tortured, or simply discriminated against, by the “loving” believers.

  4. Removing religion leaves lots of room for science and discovery of real wonders instead of fake ones.

Those atheists who sit back and say “It’s alright not to know.” And, “Maybe we will never know, I am happy with that,” would have to rate as the least adventurous, courageous, inquisitive, and intelligent of the people I’ve come across.

Every person has this priceless gift of ‘life’, something that can’t be artificially created, can’t be prolonged indefinitely, can’t be controlled, can’t be brought back once it’s gone, can’t be duplicated, and the duller of the atheists just shrug and say, “we don’t know what it is, or where it came from, or why it happened, or who or what was behind it, and it doesn’t matter anyway. What’s important is how we live it because it’s the only one we have.”

Then their life is taken over by earning, spending, arranging regular sex and taking care of its results, taking intoxicants, worrying, hoping, and squeezing as much as possible from the senses till they collapse. Way to go.

If our mentality is that these things don’t matter, we will surely get a birth where they certainly don’t matter. There are 8,000,000 that material nature can choose from.

Why hand over these questions to ‘science’ when it’s clearly not able to answer them, and why refuse to consider other intelligent answers because you didn’t like going to a temple or church when you were a child?

What possible advantage is there to you or the rest of the world?

I've never been good at taking things "on faith". Realizing there were no such things as gods relieved a lot of cognitive dissonance.

Ultimately, any benefits are what you make of it.

You can concentrate on living a good life without having to worry about a petty, vindictive deity recording your every move and thought. Studies show conclusive evidence that children raised “in faith” are far less compassionate and altruistic than those raised without a faith. Current US politics and politicians seem to substantiate this (with the notable exception of President Biden, who is both a believer and a great person).

What does an atheist believe are the benefits of being an atheist?

The main benefit is being able to look at reality with vision unclouded by foggy mythic lenses. The universe is a stupendously beautiful complex wonder when viewed this way—so much more majestic than a little place ruled over by a giant invisible despotic magician. It also means we can grow up and take responsibility for our own actions rather than blame some invisible spirits or “mysterious ways.”

Being able to ignore the concept of sin.

I don't mean immorality, or not knowing right from wrong, or being a bad person. Being moral, good, well-behaved, etc. are things anyone can do, regardless of their religion. And being a good person is not true of all religious people. Obviously.

I mean the concept of sin, which is a church-made law that doesn't necessarily make sense objectively or even morally.

Let's take sex, which is a big sin, maybe the biggest, under nearly every condition in many religions. (FYI: My brief religious upbringing was in the Catholic Church.)

But is sex objectively bad? Why is masturbation sinful? Why is it a sin for two adults to have consenting sex prior to marriage? Or for two people, again, consenting adults, of the same sex to do so, even if they are married? Why is it a sin to protect your body and your partner's with a device to prevent the spread of STDs? Why is it a sin to control the number of times you get pregnant? To not have kids you can't afford to raise?

Perhaps some sexual encounters wind up being regrettable. That's fair. We make mistakes, we choose unwisely, we live and learn. But a sin? Like, we are going to hell for that sex if we don't confess? Is that fair?

Obviously, there can be lifelong repercussions to some sexual situations. Being raped is horrible. Unwanted pregnancy is horrible. STDs can be permanent, incurable. No one wants those things to happen. But lading on the additional mental and spiritual agony of calling it sin is in no way helpful.

To me, the church has committed great harm by demonizing normal sexual desires inherent in us as human animals. To be told, as you experience your adolescent sexual awakening, that those feelings, urges, and desires are some kind of spiritual blight, is really harmful. That sex is bad, bad, BAD prior to marriage, at which point it becomes super-duper good, is contradictory and confusing to many. And banning birth control? I think it's incredibly harmful to arbitrarily deny people disease protection and a way to prevent poverty. And the psychic toll on gays, lesbians, anyone with a different sexuality, who are told they are abominations, evil, etc. - by religious leaders who can't accept that homosexuality is normal. How many children were rejected by their own families for their sexuality, which they cannot change or control, over the centuries? How many despairing people have committed suicide over their conviction that they sin by merely existing? It's heartbreaking, maddening.

Yes, there are sexual things that are wrong. Lying to someone to get them to sleep with you. Breaking someone's trust by being unfaithful. Coercion of any kind. Rape. Physical harm. Pedophilia. But you don't need a pope or pastor to tell you that.

But assigning the burden of sin, and the threat of an eternity of being tortured in hell, for normal human sexuality is as cruel a thing as I can imagine. And as an atheist, I don't have to participate in a belief system that perpetrates that cruelty.

Original Question:

What are the advantages of being an atheist?

My Answer:

Atheism is merely the disbelief in the existence of any deities. There's nothing else involved.

Many theists are under the mistaken impression that being an atheist means all kinds of things that it doesn't. It doesn't mean that atheists lack good morals or that they are unethical. Other than not going to any religious services and not praying or turning over a portion of my income, I can't think of any advantages. The negatives are obvious, with theists who make judgment calls about us without knowing anything about any particular atheists.

Disadvantage: A-hole theists (mostly Christians and Muslims, though sometimes Hindus too) calling you bad names and occasionally trying to convert/kill you.

Knowing that you are right. I will explain this.

The feasibility of religion comes from historical references to a different mindset and a different age.

Life was cheap and the best way of changing a persons thought process was to stop the life.

Now that has been frowned upon, we now have to bring logic and reasoning to the table, and we start to run into issues.

Firstly, we cannot be sure that what was recorded is real and we know that the brain is flawed in many aspects, so we have decided that the best way for evidence is multiple, independent streams of proof.

“I know” does not cut it, “I feel” is falsifiable and to finish all of that off , the response that everyone should be saying which is “I don’t know” is very unpopular because we should know - right?

Well, we don’t. But this is what I would like to finish with.

Would you be comfortable to be tried in a court of law with the type of evidence that you bring to the table explaining why there is a god or deity?

What are the advantages of being a theist over being an atheist and vice versa?

Such a simple question. Yet it not only goes to a problematic aspect of religion vs none but also to a problematic aspect of the way some people think.

I am a former Christian. I was raised in a devout fundamentalist Christian family so I was quite literally trained from infancy to believe, including attending church, Sunday School, summer camp, Vacation Bible School, playing Bible-study games, etc.

I have been an atheist for decades.

So while I can’t answer for every believer or nonbeliever, I do think I have perspectives on both sides of the belief dichotomy.

If I’d been asked this question as a believer I wouldn’t have hesitated to list a cornucopia of advantages starting with having a Personal Friend in the Lord, assurance of Heaven, a happy church family for loving support and so on. I probably would also have tossed off a few shots at those poor, misguided atheists who would have none of these benefits.

To which the atheist that I am now responds that while I did indeed believe all those things, I now think I was misguided then - intentionally guided and with good intentions, but misguided nonetheless. That would mean that the only real benefit in that list would’ve been the human social and emotional benefits, which while based on something that probably isn’t real, were still valid.

What wasn’t valid was the claim that as a nonbeliever I couldn’t and wouldn’t enjoy fellowship, family and social support and every one of those human benefits that a churchgoer enjoys, though not through a church, of course.

Next, the problematic aspect of the question: The heart of the problem is the question of “advantage” or “utility.” Again and again I see these questions that all but say, “Yeah, but don’t you think people are better off as believers because <fill in the social good someone thinks that only piety provides.>”

And my answer is: No. People are better off choosing for themselves, not manipulated into paying lip-service to traditions based on superstition and myth. Offering purported advantages, whether they are posthumous rewards, comfort based on magic or sociological and emotional support in exchange for just going along with the idea of piety is a matter of degrading both the person the Utilitarian is trying to manipulate as well as the sincere believers whose beliefs are based on personal experience and study. It’s as if a person who advocates churchgoing for your own good were standing at the pulpit with a checkbook asking, “What’ll it take to put you in a pew?” (And, sadly, huge churches have sprung up with almost that pitch.)

So, for the Nth time: “Advantage” in regard to belief or non-belief is a shill, a really bad reason for taking on a persona. If you really are a believer or non-believer it’s because of lots of reasons, none of which are likely to be based on advantage.
