Back Pain Permanent Healing: Understanding the Myths, Lies, and Confusion Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.6 out of 5 stars 170 ratings

Number one international best seller in pain management and health, fitness & dieting categories. Back pain is now the number one cause of disability worldwide; this is ironic, because the mystery was solved in the 1970s by Dr. John Sarno at the New York University Medical Center. Tragically, few sufferers accepted his solution. Despite possessing the most advanced healing techniques in history, the problem has grown into the main cause of global disability because the focus has been on treating the spine: a failed model for healing. Back Pain Permanent Healing examines why people are having trouble healing, why they refuse to accept healing, and why back pain has become epidemic. Through deeper understanding of the myths, lies, and confusion - healing occurs.

I’ve been a follower of Dr John Sarno for years. This book has a lot more useful information than any other books

If you’re reading this review, I know you’re in serious pain. So, I won’t bury the lead. Read any of Dr. Sarno’s 3 books NOW. Then immediately follow that by reading any 3 of Steve-O’s books. I know through personal experience that pain makes you dumb. You can’t think about anything else in the midst of pain, therefore dumb ensues. Yeah, you can grit your teeth and go through the motions of day-to-day life, but who’s really thinking, or living for that matter, when there’s so much pain? Not you. So, again…search “Sarno,” search “Ozanich,” release your grip, and read the books dammit! Don’t tell anybody; don’t try to explain anything to yourself or to anybody else. You’re drowning right now…so just read and the pain will go away.

You’re not fooling anyone. Everyone around you is suffering because of your pain. Your spouse, your children, your friends, your co-workers, your boss…everyone. If you can’t read these books for yourself, read for the person or people you love beyond life itself. Just for now, trust me (yeah…a total stranger) that these aren’t self help books, they’re medicine. The choice is elegantly simple: read or continue as you’ve always done.

My story: I’ve been in physical pain since infancy through until age 55. It started with migraine when I was pre-verbal…I only know because my mother told me so. Then, in order of appearance, added to that were stomach aches, panic attacks, back pain, adult onset acne, neck pain, insomnia, hip pain, shoulder pain, several types of gastro intestinal complaints, scalp irritation, elbow pain and hand pain. Yeah…my body was a torture chamber circumnavigating a merry-go-round. The doctors and treatment specialists had serious sounding names for all these discreet pain complaints and almost always had an explanation and treatment for each. For decades I paid handsomely in time and money for medical doctors and specialists, treatment modality specialists, machine and needle operators, physical therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, massage therapists, Alexander and Bowen technique instructors, pillows, mattresses, mattress pads, heating pads, ice packs, TENS units, soaps, creams, ointments, herbal remedies, internet research, and last but not least the mountains of Advil, Tums and Pepcid. Still, on a weekly basis, I’d find myself sitting in front of my computer at work gritting my teeth through pain so intense I was burping and/or nauseous…and every once in a while sitting on an emergency room table getting shot up with stuff that would interrupt the pain at least for a little while so I could get some sleep. But the pain in one form or another would always come back again…and again. Something had to give. A friend recommended a book. It was Sarno’s book. Before I had read halfway through it, I fired my neurologist and orthopedist and quit my physical therapist and chiropractors (yes, 2 of them…one for the neck and back and the other for the hips and massage). Then I responsibly titrated off all the drugs and supplements. I wasn’t afraid. I was relieved…and so was my family. My journey had begun.

Step out of your own way just for the amount of time it takes to read a couple of books, and let your journey begin.

I owe a debt of gratitude to Steve Ozanich. His first book, "The Great Pain Deception" was crucial in my healing from years of chronic pain. I was later to receive a fibromyalgia diagnosis (which I have since adamantly rejected!). I saw a myriad of specialists and therapists through the years. But it wasn't until I discovered Dr. Sarno and subsequently Steve Ozanich that I finally began healing.
In this book, Steve focuses on back pain. But even if the source of your pain is elsewhere, this book can be extraordinarily helpful to you as the brain/pain mechanisms are all the same.
There are a few things I especially love about this book. First, he pays tribute to Dr. John E. Sarno - this is the man who open the doors of freedom for thousands upon thousands of sufferers who have been imprisoned by pain. With the successes Steve has had as a mindbody coach, he could be prone to say "look at what I've done!" Instead, he chooses humility and points to Dr. Sarno. That's credibility in my book.
The second thing I love about this book is he is not selling anything. No Three Step Program to Heal. No Inner Circle Membership. No Anointed Healing Cloth. I don't mean to sound jaded but as I get older I get cautious of those claiming to want to help me. It usually means - hang on to you wallet.
Not with Steve. He wants to help you. He wants to see you empowered. He knows YOU are able to heal yourself. Will it take some work? Yes. And that begins with KNOWLEDGE. Which can begin when you purchase this book.
You owe it to yourself - get this book! Life is too precious and short to be in chronic pain.
PS At one time I thought my exercise routine would consist of flexing one finger - provided that one finger wasn't hurting. Today, I exercise everyday including Zumba and no longer live off ibuprofen.
Note to Steve - if you decide to do the healing cloth thing, I'll expect a commission. ;)

Steve Ozanich is probably the most authoritative TMS resource out there who isn’t an MD. And I’d put his work a notch above most of the MDs out there writing TMS books except probably Dr. Sarno himself. Steve is a recovered TMS sufferer himself which certainly adds credibility to what he has to say. As an outpatient orthopedic physical therapist I see a lot of TMS in my practice. I normally try to get these patients to read one of Dr. Sarno’s books and/or Steve’s first book; The Great Pain Deception. The Great Pain Deception is one of the most lauded books on health and pain recovery. And it’s a much more exhaustive introduction and explanation of TMS than you’ll find anywhere else. Steve goes out and finds much more scientific theory and support to support the existence of TMS than any other TMS recovery books I've seen. That being said if you are new to TMS that’s where you might consider going first. You can find his first book here. The Great Pain Deception: Faulty Medical Advice Is Making Us Worse

If you’ve already read Steve’s first book and you’re wondering what this one has to offer I think the answer is that this book fills in some blanks, can help reinforce your belief in TMS and talks about self-growth as a means of healing and remaining pain free. I like Steve’s approach that healing from TMS is not just about accepting you have inner rage that causes you pain. Because for many TMS sufferers simple acceptance of the diagnosis of TMS isn’t enough. He writes about an element of personal growth that helps prevent the accumulation of more resentment and inner rage which just leads to more TMS symptoms.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well written ready reference on TMS

This book is an excellent guide on TMS. The core strength of this book is that It goes into much more detail than any other book that I have read on the psychology of TMS and how to counter it. It explains TMS related phinominan such as why the pain shifts about and what your brain does. There is no jargon and no medical training is required to understand the contents of the book. One of the more engaging aspects of the book is the chapter headings. They are not the most obvious but they did whet my apatite to see what was in that chapter. You can skim through the book if you so choose. Read the sections that you need. I wish that Mr. Ozanich had included a section on when an injury is not TMS. This book along with Fred Amir's rapid recovery from neck and back pain, Dr. Sarno's books and Mr. Ozanich's great pain deception form an integral part of my TMS reference library. I am a recovered TMS sufferor. I used to have pain in the index finger of my right hand and had a hard time typing. I recovered using the techniques pioneered by Dr. Sarno.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another must-read for any chronic pain sufferer

I first read Dr Sarno's last book and then, thanks to the wiki site, I was told about Mr Ozanich's first book and I devored it. Both did help, each held my interest and I read them cover to cover.
I bought this one because I belong to this category of people who (though they believe they suffer from TMS and not fibro as I was diagnosed six years ago) need to read the same info but written or told differently. I reckon I grew tired of always rereading the two chapters of Dr Sarno's books, so I know I need some variety and I also know that in each book I will learn some new stuff.
I found this new book particularly encouraging and positive. It is very different from The Great Pain Deception (which you should read too, just for the pleasure of knowing more about the author and his witty mind plus having the impression of seeing so much of you in his ordeal and knowing he is healed) and both are complementary.
I love the fact that Steve Ozanich always puts Dr Sarno first, this is an immense tribute to this man who never tried to be under the spotlights (of course, he was too busy curing his patients!).
But there is a lot more to it in this book : you will read WHY you are not entirely healed (which is my case as I have strong resisting tendencies, oh my my !).
Don't look for a HOW TO kind of book, there is not a single manner to heal as the author puts it, each individual will find his or hers. We have to be patient and stop looking at the calendar with impatience and certainly not resign as there is a way out for who wishes to live a happy life.
I have underlined (again) many paragraphs and will reread them along with some of Sarno's work. I hate journaling but it did me so much good that I will journal again. After all : what do I want? Live a horrible life, half crippled or be my true self?
Not following sound advice would be foolish.
